Fights Father's Efforts to Annul Marriage

Stepmother of Four, Three Older Than Herself, Defies Parents.

Times Special CARPENTERSVILLE, Ind, Oct. 20.—Checking back her tears, 15-year-old Helen Gowin today said she would “fight to the last minute” her father’s efforts to take her away from her 50-year-old husband. At the same time, she said she wes happier than she ever had been in her life. Happier—even though by becoming the wife of a man more than three times her age she has become the stepmother of four children, three of whom are older than herself, and even though three cases are pending in Putnam Circuit Court as a result of her marriage. It all started a year ago When Edgar M. Gowin, 50, moved next door to Mr. and Mrs. Artie Boswell in Carpentersville, a village two and a half miles north of Bainbridge.

Onions for Breakfast

Their daughter Helen was unhappy at home, she said, charging her father “beat me and made me edt onions for breakfast.” She threatened to leave home, and he defied her, she said. All last year, she helped Gowin with the housework and ate some ‘ meals at his house, she said. Gowin's wife had tied two years before. He lived in Carpentersville with his daughter Imogene, 186, and his son Eugene, 12. Two other sons, Fred, 21, and Herman, 19, had married. Gowin proposed to Helen in the spring. One day in August, Helen had an argument with her father tomato,” she said. She went next door to Gowin and told him, “If you're ready, Ed, I am’ They

went to Crawfordsville and were i

married Aug. 10. Annulment Asked

Gowin was arrested Aug. 13, charged. with contributing to the delinquency of a minor in a warrant signed by Helen's father. He was released under $300 bond. At the same time, suit was filed by Boswell in his daughter’s behalf to have her marriage annulled on grounds she was not of age and lacked her parents’ consent. The latest court action was a plea by Gowin alleging that Boswell had no authorization to sue for divorce in his daughter's behalf. Fred V. Thomas is attorney for Boswell; John H. James is counsel for Gowin. Both are from Greencastle. The young wife and her mother and father have spoken to each other but once since her marriage. She is going to ‘stick it out” and “fight Dad tothe end,” she said today. Does Her Part

The stepdaughter, Imogene, said of her year-vounger stepmother: “She is a good worker. She 1s childlike, but I appreciate I should learn her. Dad thought it would help me with the work. So I don't mind her. She does her part.” As an example of Helen's willingness to work, Imogene told how yesterday the child-wife “put out the whole wash, moved the cabinet and scrubbed the kitchen.” “I'm just a little older than she is, but that doesn’t make any difference to me,” Imogene said. “We're all for her. She’s happy here. This is where she wanted to be.” Both Imogene and Helen quit school after finishing the seventh grade. Gowin said his six-acre farm is for sale. He wants to move into another neighborhood. He believes “nothing will ever come” of the suits that are filed against him/ and Helen, but if Boswell presses them, Gowin says he “will fight in the courts to the end” to keep Helen.

Hearings Not Set

No date has been set for hearings. If something isn't done soon, Gowin said he will go to Greencastle and demand his $300 bond or a jury trial. Carpentersville is in Jackson Township, in the northeast corner of Putnam County. According to Sheriff John Sutherlin, the .township is thickly populated and is “backward.” _Gowin does not own the farm, the sheriff said, but had it deeded to him conditionally by Matthew Fggers, his father-in-law by his first marriage. An attempt by Gowin to sell the place last year was blocked by Eggers, the sheriff said. According to Deputy Sheriff William Ashworth, when he went to Carpentersville to serve papers on jhe Gowins last summer, Helen told “I can't go with you. What am 3 I to do with the children? I can't leave them here alone.” Ashworth said he pointed out one child was a year older than Helen, and that they had been alone for more than two years.
