COMMUNISM PROBE ASSUMES NEW ANGLE
* By United Press AUSTIN, Tex, Oct. 16.—The state’s investigation of ‘“communism” in its schools—which turned to
the wholly unrelated subject of sulphur—took a swing in justice court today with two state Representatives and two University of Texas students as principal participants. The students, both witnesses at . the Legislature's special committee hearings, made Representatives Tom Cooper Jr. and Joe Caldwell Jr. answer questions of Peace Justice Thomas Decker on how the committee had come by certain letters. “The letters were stolen,” the students charged. The legislators ‘denied the charge... Rep. Caldwell said he obtained them from a client whose name he could not divulge.
ROCKEFELLER TOWN HOUSE TO BE RAZED
By United Press NEW YORK, Oct. 16.—The palatial town house of John D. Rockefeller Jr., one of the last vestigates of New York's former millionaire mid.town neighborhood, will be razed next year. An announcement by Rockefeller that he would move to a Park-av. apartment next spring was accepted today as confirmation of recent reports that a new structure would rise soon on the site of the -eight-story mansion. The 71-year-old brownstone home of his father which adJoins the property also will pass into .the hands of wreckers, but probably not during the lifetime of the elder Reckefeller.
60 JAILED AFTER LETTUCE STRIKE RIOT
By United Pre nA SALINAS, Cal, Oct. 16.—Salinas jails were crowded with prisoners today following a wild outbreak of ~ hostilities in the lettuce workers’ strike. Sheriff Carl Abbott organized 200 . additional deputies to maintain order after officers dispersed a rioting band of 400 pickets with nearly 50 tear gas bombs. Sixty strikers were arrested after . pickets stormed the Salinas Valley Jee Co. lettuce packing plant, where non union men have been employed in preparing and shipping lettuce ‘for Eastern markets behind barricades bolstered by armed guards.
