¥

in New Film!

Picture Opening ‘at Circle Theater for Week's Engagement.

Having just returned from seeing “The Big Broadcast of - 1937" which opened at the - Circle today for a week's engagement, I find that type- . writers, copy paper, offices and such things are very, very, stuffy indeed. : For too short a time I sat and had . the time of my life watching Jack Benny, Gracie Allen, Martha Raye, and scores of others have fun in one of the maddest films released. It's so fast and furious that you find yourself laughing out loud at an antic, right on into the music of

Btokowski and his symphony orcnestra; or remembering that music when, to be up to date, you should be getting the latest story about Bob Burns’ uncle, who Tm sure was somewhat “fetched in the haid.”

Gracie Allen Funniest

Gracie Allen is one of the funfest women of the screen—and I don't tell that to all the girls. She reaches a new high when, in a per-

fect intellectual stride, she plays leap frog on two occasions with people who hdve tripped and are trying to pick themselves up. The action, most of it, takes place in: a radio office. Radio comes in for a good natured kidding, such as the movies have been known to give themselves and the.stage and radio, for that matter, itself, Bob Burns, hunting Mr. Stokow= ski, to demonstrate his new musical instrument, wanders into studio after.studio where women are giving air advice to listeners. He gives them advice. For instance he tells of a perfect way to preserve a peach complexion of a woman even to her eightieth year; a complexion, as he says, that is round, and brown and fugzy.

Celebrated Hands

Mr. Stokowski’s celebrated hands, which are shown in closeup as he leads his remarkable orchestra, are the newest screen personalities. They pretty much steal that part of. the show. Mr. Stokowski himself is suitably austere. Anyway, when Benny Goldman and his swing band aren't making music, and some times when thay arg; when Eleanore Whitney isn’t twinkle toeing; when Benny Fields isn’t crooning; - when * Miss Raye isn't performing with talented . idiocy. When one or all of those things aren't happening, Shirley Ross and Ray Milland are pursuing the diffi- . cult road of misunderstanding to “true love” that winds up. in an enormous radio = wedding = with “Lohengrin” in swing time. . -My f{riends, it is Jatdes than the Marx Brothers dippiest. It gives you a great op t this rate it’s sure to be (an apa institution of films, like "the Scandals of the sttage. (By J. C..

Mystery “Solution Guarded With Care

Times Special HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 16.—Every precaution has been taken to keep the solution of “After the Thin Man” a complete mystery. Not even the stars, William Powell and Myrna Loy, know the ending to Dashiell ‘Hammett's story. The last four scenes are missing from the scri and the only copy is locked in a safety deposit vault. ‘When the picture is finished, the final scenes JI be photographed behind closed doors, Only five people have read the completed . seript.. They are Hunt Stromberg, Director W. S. Van Dyke, the author and scenarists, Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.

Complicate "Film's Plot

{+t adies in“Love’ at Apollo,

Called- Satisfactory Entertainment.

. BY JAMES THRASHER . The ladies of “Ladies in Love” certainly pay and pay, in accordance with best melodramatic tradition. : But they are paid off satis: factorily in the end, thus i ironing out the foul sided romantic difficulties that beset the heroines of this week's Apollo feature. Janet ‘Gaynor, Loretta. Young, Constance ‘Bennett and Simone Simon all have the title role.

The locale of “Ladies in Love” is

Budapest, though that doesn’t mean you are going to see another “Good Fairy”—probably ‘hecause Ladislaus

Busfekete is not’ quite another Ferenc Melnar when it comes to play writing. Anyway, the action takes place in Budapest, though the theme song is Johann Strauss’ very Viennese “Wiener Blut,” and the only food mentioned is the very Viennese “wiener schnitzel.” The Misses Bennett, Gaynor and Young take an dapaytment together. Miss Bennett, who isa mannequin, pays - one-half; Miss: Young, a chorine;, and Miss Gaynor, who sells neckties and takes care of a doctor's laboratory rabbits, pay the other.

. The Plot Thickens

Miss Gaynor eventually falls in love with her doctor. ‘Miss Bennet, who is entertaining Paul Lukas:on vacation from South America, doesn’t ‘believe in:love, but loses her heart to him. just: as he loses: his to Simone ‘Simon. Miss plays a very young ‘and devoted school girl who runs away from school and persuades the middieaged Mr. Lukas to.marry her after two minutes of very persuasive talking with a French accent. Miss Young meets Tyrone Power Jr., a friend of Mr. Lukas. He is a count. He also isa two-timer who marries some one else right at the height of their courting. ‘The solution is that Miss Gaynor, after quarre ‘with her doctor (Don Ameche) and getting a job as valet to a magician (Alan Mowbray), patches up the quarrel. Miss Bennett marries some one else, who is rich and gives Miss Youngenough money for her heart’s desire, which is a 'hat shop. Miss Simon, as we have remarked, gets her: man...

“Mowbray’s Work: Praised

in Love” is plelSanit com “edy for the most part, and it comes close to being “tops” whenever Mr.

Mowbray is on the screen. As the |

neurotic, condescending, “arty” magician who worries about his “polydigitalitis”—it’s in’ his hands— he is perfectly swell. ‘The producers have succeeded admirably in splitting the not; too unusual plot four different’ ‘ways. That's a little hard on the plot but very fair to the featured saectresses. And in the Misses Gaynor, Young,

Bennett and Simon you Have the: fanciest: melange of stellar talent

that has been assembled. in one pic-

ture since “Grand Hotel.” Which |

COOPER TENNIS. STAR ; Gary Cooper, currently co-starred with Jean Arthur in: Cecil B.: DeMiile’s production, “TheiPlainsman,” is regarded as one of the most formidable tennis opponents among the male stars of the screen.

PAL OF VALLEE

' Because she kept a date with Rudy Vallee for a party at Rudy's ° Maine camp, ‘Judy Stewart (above), was threatened with loss of her showgirl job in Boston. The manager of her troupe. took her back after she had missed one performance, but Judy stil was indignant over questions regarding a possible: romance with Vallee. With two sisters, she once sang on Vallee’s radio program.
