Adults, Too, Win Praise of Reviewer

Loew’s Also: Has ‘They Met

in a Taxi’ on New Program.

BY JOE COLLIER * The kids in “The Devil Is a Sissy,” which opened today at Loew's, have fun. They pretty much ignore whatever social significance was injected into the picture and just

have a screen picnic. They can have an acting picnic, . too, because all three of them are

darn good actors: Namely, Freddie Bartholomew,” Jackie Cooper and! Mickey Rooney. If one ever was tempted to make an adult generalization that all kid actors have to be seen indulgently, he should count 10 and see “The Devil Is a Sissy,” in the order named, before putting the observation orally in public. Not that adults in the picture are unworthy of their parts. Ian Hunter, Peggy Conklin and Gene Lockhart especially are good. But their

The issue in the campaign, according to Robert Benchley as he is recorded in a short opening today at Loew's, is, among other things, possible Indians. In about the funniest short one will see in moons, he explains that there was a great deal of confusion among engineers over the fact that the river they were harnessing with two dams, one for show and one hidden by a bush, turned out, a short time later, to be a state highway. :

parts are background, and they act them so—they act them as if they! knew it is the kids’ show and let them have it. Accent Hangs On

|

Master Bartholomew arrives on the New York slum scene in the picture shortly after he has taken the silver spoon out of his mouth, but before the impediment (Oxford accent) it caused in his speech! disappeared. He is thrown with Master Cooper and Master Rooney who neither understand the Oxford accent nor | like it; nor does Freddie. It 1s he, not the devil, in their eyes, who is a sissy, but by dint of punching them in the eye and making them understand “he can take it.” enlists them as friends. In the process, his versions of Fast Side slang add up to be very amusing. He, personally as a juvenile Robinhood leads a -larcenous expedition into his own mother's “home—the home where he almost swallowed the silver spoon—and that episode leads the three of them into . juvenile court. The juvenile court episode is sup"posed to carry a message, and maybe it does. Maybe it shows boys and girls that the devil, because he once was an angel, but had not the will power to ‘go straight,” is a sissy. I don't know.

Youngsters Are Good

What I got out of the picture was that Freddie Bartholomew, Mickey Rooney and Jackie Cooper are good actors in a show they like, having 8 good time. for a fee, of course. . Also nn the bill is a short subject with Robert Benchley entitled “How to Vote,” and is about the funniest thing on the screen today. It is a monologue with illustrations. Elsewhere on this page you can get a terse idea of what it is all about. Then there is the second picture, “They Met in a Taxi.” Chester Morris, Fay Wray and Lionel Stander take the leads in a story writ- _ ten by Octavus Roy Cohen. Personally, I'm pretty dippy about Chester Morris and that kind of comedy. So I wouldn't be able to say objectively about what kind of entertainment it is. You'll just have to take chances with that.

G. B. Shaw Rapped by Irked Screen Writer for Criticisms.

By United Press

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 9.— Charles, Earl of Warwick, established himself in a small Hollywood bungalow today, and prepared to launch his screen career under the banner of a major studio.

The English nobleman arrived from New York by airplane, and

was greeted by a group of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer executives. The Earl was signed to appear in pictures after nearly a year of negotiations with the studio which felt the slim Britisher was a real screen prospect. Hi first picture has not been selected yet but studio executives said they hoped to choose and get the film started within a few weeks.

George Bernard Shaw's recent outburst about scenario writers being bellboys who did not have the ability to handle his plays, today drew a heated answer from Grover Jones, a studio scrivener. The veteran screen writer declared:

“The Senile Sage of the Ages is at it again. Once we had warts, pugdogs and Shaw. Now we only have Shaw, so why not fnake the best of it?” Shaw's remarks about scenario writers were made in a letter to Samuel Goldwyn, film producer, who was trying to persuade the Irish playwright that he should permit his dramas to be screened.

Music Taste Differences

Are Bridged

Film Work Bring: Brings Popular, Classical Supporters Together.

By United Press HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 9.— Motion pictures have done much to bring together supe porters of classical and pop-

ular music.

Entrance of operatic stars inte pictures, mahy of which presented a mixture of both types of music, has served fo “educate” each fac= tion and point to the possibility of a common musical meeting ground. An example of this new broade minded attitude is seen in the re« marks of Lawrence Tibhett while working in "Under Your Spell.” Comedian Arthur Treacher, worke ing in the same film, drew the barjtone into a discussion of the “classic versus popular” feud. = Tibbett immediately handed Treacher a surprise by stating he believed the two men with the best sense of rhythm were Arture Toscanini, Italian conductor, and Bill Robinson, tap dancer. .

They were Paul Whites man’s recordings of “When Day Is Done” and “Rhapsody in Blue.” - Tibbett also said he was fond of Duke Ellington's rendition of “The Indigo Blues” and Don.
