day by State Fire Marshal Clem Smith as he revealed that 40 persons have been killed, 169 injured, and property damaged $5,047,632 by fires and explosions during the first nine months of 1936. The 1935 fire loss for the same period totalled $4,345,843, the report showed, an increase of more than $700,000 this year. The loss was divided equally between urban and rural districts, Mr. Smith said. Thirty-eight persons were killed and 110 injured in fires and explosions during the same period last year, the report showed. Mr. Smith said total damage to Indiana property holders from fires of every origin since the founding of the Fire Marshal's departmore than $158,000,000. More than 124,000 fires have been
