GOV. WNUTT IS ‘POWER MAD’

Charges Personnel Morale Has Been Destroyed by Spoils System.

Timea Speeinl WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Oct. 8. —Raymond 8S. Springer, Republican nominee for Governor, charged in a political address here last night that Gov. McNutt had “gone money and power mad.” “He has become calloused to the idea of heaping new and fresh bur- * dens upon the taxpayers,” Mr. Springer said. “No matter how much money he is spending now or intends to spend under his proposed increased budget, he never will improve the efficiency of his personnel under the spoils system. “He has destroyed the morale of the personnel by the reorganization act under which the terms of all employes of state institutions con- © tinue only at the pleasure and discretion of the Governor.” The . Republican nominee said Democratic criticism of his tax proposals indicated that Gov. McNutt was considering a 2 per cent gross income tax with lowered exempions.

McNutt to Conduct

Open Forum

Repeating the tactics he used in the congressional campaign two ‘years ago, Gov. McNutt is to begin his campaigning by conducting an “open forum” at a Democratic rally in the Indianapolis Producers Market, South and New Jersey-sts, Wednesday night. Democratic county headquarters announced the Governor will invite questions from the audience. Martin Walpole is to be chairman. Others to speak are Mayor Kern, Circuit Court Judge Earl R. Cox and Miss Hannah A. Noone, Center ~Township trustee. The Governor also is to speak briefly at a second meeting the same night in the Tenth Ward at 2500 E. Washington-st. Townsend Challenges Springer on Tax Ideas

Times Special PAOLI, Ind. Oct. 8.—M. Clifford Townsend, Democratic gubernatorial candidate, charged that his Republican. rival, Raymond 8S. Springer, was afraid to lay the cards on the table concerning his tax ideas. He spoke at a political rally here yesterday. “Those who assail the Democratic program for better government in Indiana have not to this hour offered a constructive suggestion of their own,” he said.

Lowering Standards

Charging the New Deal with undermining foundations of the constitutional system, George L. Denny, Indianapolis attorney, in a Republican radio broadcast last night on station WIRE, said that President Roosevelt has set civil service standards back 40 years. Fairness: demands that the New Deal be distinguished from real democratic forms of government, Mr. Denny said.

Socialist Denied Place on Posey Ballot

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. Oct. 8.—

The Socialist Party was denied a place on the Posey County ballot today because William Rabe Sr, Evansville, candidate for Congress from the Eighth District, failed to file within the deadline set by law. Rabe’s petition was received Oct. 5. and the deadline was Oct. 3, according to the clerk’s office.

Five persons were injured here last night in automobile accidents attributed to slippery streets. Miss Phyllis Payne, 25, of 3060 N. Meridian-st, escaped with minor cuts when the automobile she was driving caught fire after skidding into a parked car owned by James Welch, 5150 E. Washington-st, at Ritter-av and E. Washington-st. They were riding in a car driven by William Jurgens, 22, of 1622 Kellen-st, when it collided with another driven by William Buckley, 37, of R. R. 4, Box, 53, police said. Robert Devore, 42, of 530 S. New Jersey-st, was taken to Veterans’ Hospital for treatment after the automobile in which he was riding with James Johnson, 28, of 517 N. Delaware-st, hit a parked car owned by Edgar B. Dickey, 37, R. R. 25, Box 700, on 38th-st near Road 67, a sheriff’s report said.

annual convention in Hotel Lincoln. He cited that 20 million personas in this country have hernia and that the affliction takes an annual toll of 6000 lives.
