OVERTIME PARKING WARNING 1S ISSUED

Motorists who have been taking “undue advantage” of the Indianapolis police department while its “fix-proof” sticker books are being audited were warned to beware by Chief Morrissey today. Denying a political contention between the decline in stickers issued and the approach of Nov. 3, Chief Morrissey said the State Accounts Board had been asked to make the

audit in July, but was too busy then

to take action until two weeks ago. ‘He said that all overtime parking stickers, used by 100 officers, were being audited to see if any “had been taken care of.” He expects the other stickers to be returned to the 100 officers “any time,” he said. An argument flared last night at the City Council meeting between Mr. Morrissey and Councilman Edward F. Kealing, Republican, who said withdrawal of the stickers was a Democratic political move. —————————— i cities

Fire Prevention Week, marking the anniversary of the Chicago fire,

| said to have ‘started when Mrs.

O'Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern in 1871, is being observed this week. ‘Forty city firemen have been detailed to inspect and correct fire kazard conditions in ‘Indianapolis. Chief Fred C. Kennedy said the inspection is to continue until the entire territory is covered. Stressing the danger of delayed alarms, Chief Kennedy and Assistant Chief Bernard Lynch, in charge

of fire prevention, have started a|

fire prevention educational campaign which is to reach schools, clubs, civic groups and industries. Fire prevention work in recent

| years . tint y reduced insurance: rates in many cases from 80 cents a $100 valuation to 55 cents, said Chief Lynch. Numerous firetraps, old buildings, have been torn down, lowering the rates for surrounding structures. More than 3200 fire alls have ben investigated this year, Chief Lynch said. Approximately 2350 orders to clear rubbish and debris have been issued. A total of 20,377 inspections have béen made. Chief Lynch said every week is fire prevention week in his bureau, but special efforts are being made this week to call attention to the necessity for every home owner to clear up fire hazards. Piles of damp papers, mattresses and other debris promote spontaneous combustion, said Chief Kennedy. “A clean house seldom burns,” |ence he said. “Good housekeeping is equally important in large indus-

trial buildings. Sprinkler systems |

should be installed wherever possible. In the home, keep floors, basements and attics clean, not only this week, but every week.”
