|Civil War in Spain Conflict
‘Between Dictatorships and Dem ocracy, Professor Says
Italy and Germany,
Seeking to Overthrow Republic,
Providing Rebel Arms, Prof. Rey Declares; Predicts Long-Continued Struggle.
Times Special
. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Oct. 6.—The Spanish civil war is not so much Spanish. against Spaniard as it is Italy and Germany against democracy, in the opinion of Prof. Agapito Rey of Indiana University. Prof. Rey, a native-born Spaniard who has been a naturalized American citizen for many years, said the current rebellion would have been in the beginning by the government, and still could be suppressed,
were it not that “dictetorial Italy and Germany form the backbone of the rebel forces.” “It appears now thai the rebels will emerge with the victory,” Prof. Rey observed, “but I.hope something unforeseen will -occur fo give the government a second breath. Of course, I am deeply concerned with it all, especially so because all my sympathies are with the government in power. “1 favor the progressives not es a matter of politics, but because I
am eager to see Spain continue as
a pure republic. If the rebels gain control, the country i: certain to revert to dictatorship—a dictatorship guided by our cunning friends, Il Duce and Der Fuebrer.”
Though Prof. Rey, a member of the Indiana University Spanish faculty for 12 years, has not ‘been in Spain since the outbreak of the revolution, he keeps in close correspondence with native friends and regularly receives issues of the government newspapers. “Some American newspapers, in-

WILLIAMSON'S Scientific FOOTBALL RATINGS AND PREDICTIONS
Picking the winners of weekly gridiron games is a science with P. B. Williamson. From information furnished him on 500 teams the country over, Williamson makes his selections and calculates the relative team strength by a mathematical formula that has been found to be 88 per cent accurate in over 2,000
games.

sofar as 1 can observe, do not report the true story at all,” Prof. Rey said. “They deliberately turn sentiment
in this country against the Spanish | said
progressive government by referring to the government forces as ‘Reds.” The progressive government is far from communistic. It is socialistic —much like the Labor Union party in the United States. There are eight communists in the parliament —a small minority—but this is only a proof of the progressive belief in free thought and free vote. “There is an obvious reason behind this misinformation given by some American newspapers, With a national election coming up soon, it
that ling party is formed of the Spanish Catholic Church, deposed noblemen end embittered military men— forced out of power in the election last—=now in strong. coalition with Italy, Germany and Portugal. ' “Understand, I refer to the church solely in regard to its political activities. Church officials were using untaxed land—almost half of Spain, in fact—for unrecorded financial gain before the republic was set up by progressives in 1931. Of course, opposition flared at once when the government checked the officials’ graft by ordering taxes paid on all land except that on which the churches proper were located,” he
“The government armies are com-
posed mostly of civilian party pa- |
triots and outnumber the rebels considerably, but are far inferior in arms and ammunition supplies. Italy and Germany are openly pouring munitions into the rebel ranks through Portugal,” Prof. charged. “Supplies are landed at
| Lisbon and carried by train across
to the Spanish border. “On the other hand, the government’s back is to the wall because it

neutrality and will not sell war supplies. Russia tenders its sympathy,
but sympathy can not be used to fight against bullets. Mexico has
sent a few supplies—not much help. |
“It seems strange to see France and England so passive when their safety as well as equality on the Mediterranean is hanging in the balance,” Prof. Rey said. “And yet, they are doing the only thing it is wise for them to do—nothing. “Spain races a terrifying future, no matter what the outcome,” Prof. Rey claimed. “If the rebels win, it will mean ‘only another and bloodier uprising in three or four years when the fugitives of the present government have bandeed together again. . “I do not believe American residents in Madrid need fear the rebels if the city is-taken, and it apparently will be. Americans in Madrid never have been in the slightest danger during the entire turmoil,
despite sensational stories to the contrary carried in press dispatches. Of course, an American is no more invulnerable to a stray bullet than any one else. And there's the danger of aerial bombings. “Many people here seem to have the idea that the war will be over when the rebels take Madrid,” Prof. Rey continued. “That is far from true. There are hosts of civilian volunteers in. northeast Spain who will fight to their death, and the government survivors will drop back to join them. In fact, it would be wise for the progressives to abandon Madrid now, but pride, more than
anything else, keeps them from do- |
ing so. “The end of this revolution ie still many months away. A severe winter is near. Snow fell in the mountains north of Madrid the other day. And with winter will come the most barbarous kind of dog-fighting.”
