‘Committees in Counties Proposed at Parley

on Problem.

Organization of Indiana residents !

to combat traffic fatalities was outlined at a session of the Governor's Committee on Public Safety in the Supreme Court chambers yesterday. Establishment of safety commit-

tees in the state's 92 counties with |.

supervisors to direct workers and appointment of a recodification committee to draft new traffic legislation, were proposed at the session at which Donald F. Stiver, safety director, presided. Welcomed by Gov. McNutt, the committee, a nonpartisan group of civic and governmental leaders, heard proposed solutions for traffic problems by national safety experts.

Asks Strict Driver's Law

Lew Wallace, Towa motor vehicle administrator and president of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, advocated enactment of strict driver's license and accident reporting laws. He advocated that all traffic violators submit to physicial tests before being issued driver's licenses. Sidney Williams, National Safety Council director, cited Indiana’s 5 per cent increase in highway deaths during the first eight months of this year over the same period last year. He . urged co-operation between courts and enforcement agencies.

Aims Announced

Aims set out by the Governor's committee included: 1. Organization of a public safety advisory committee to function as a directing body of the state safety

program.

2. Appointment of trained field workers to supervise activities outlined by the advisory committee in all counties of the state. 3. Conduct safety contests in all counties, with plaques to. be awarded for the best records based upon low traffic fatalities per 100,000 population. 4. Compilation of information for the public as to the loss of life occuring on the highways and streets. 5. Education of citizens in the best procedures for prevention of accidents. 6. Co-operation with state police

. to get more complete accident re-

ports. 7. Organization of committees 1n cities, towns and counties to study local traffic conditions and make

. recommendations to state police for

improvements. The proposed recodification committee would be set up under the Governor's committee to ‘promote whatever new laws are necessary and to bring the prevailing acts into such conformity that they will harmonize with recommendations of

‘the National Conference on Street

and Highway Traffic.” The conference's prposals inciude: Better driver's license law, uniform! accident reporting system and periodical inspection of motor vehicles. |
