Fists Assist in Defending His Monocle

Count Emerges Victorious in Battle, Also in Romance.

BY JOE COLLIER

The odds are two to one in the first half of “My American Wife” that Francis Lederer can't wear a monocle. The odds remain that until nearly post time when Mr. Lederer, as a Count, strikes up an acquaintance with some cow hands on an Arizona

ranch in front of a saloon.

There he does some plain and fancy fist work with the. open spaces lads who had the wrong slant on things, and Mr. Lederer, still as the Count, emerges with a black eye. . Certain previous defects in the Count's deportment, such as the studied truancy from a few formal receptions his new wife is allowing J herself as a new Countess, make it necessary for him to appear in society that night at 10:30, precisely. So, he wears a monocle. | The black eye. you know! And so goes the play, an Ami ing farce that misses a bit being as pleasant as “One Rainy Afternoon,” in which Lederer also starred) Nevertheless, it is good entertainment and Miss Ann Sothern, Miss Billie Burke and other members of the cast help make it so. Fred Stone, as the old gentleman of the ranch, does the only outstanding bad job of the lot. He is so much the nonconforming ol® rancher, who goes about scorning the social ambitions of his family, that he seems to be working) at it in three shifts. But. I like Lederer. And | Miss Billie Burke does a nice bit of lcharacter acting. Grant Mitchell is almost. always good. and Ernesy Cossart is convincing. As Count Ferdinand von und zu Reidenach, Mr. Lederer.’ marries Miss Sothern | and she and her mama (Miss Burke) bring him back to -their Arizona home town for a great social coup. The coup is run serially] with parties no end, and pretty soon the Count tires of it. He takes up with the grandfather, Lafe, who likes his ranch and is skeptical of the Count. Eventually things get into such a state that Mrs. Count and her mama are going to divorce the Count. And if you've guessed that it all ends happily, I wish you'd stop looking over my shoulder when I'm writing. The other picture, “A Son Comes Home,” deals with a problem of youth, and winds up with a compromise climax—half sad, half happy. : | Mary Boland is the star and does well. Donald Woods, I have always believed since I saw him in stock, has learned the value of a profile and a clipped accent, but almost nothing about acting. He's one of the cast. . The show definitely is second string to “My American Wife.”

After more than three -months work behind the camera, Capra took a vacation before tackling the cutting room.

Pat Gets Jungle ‘Cats’ for Pets

By United Press HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 26. — Pat O'Brien, film star, had an unusual pet problem in deciding what to do with two baby ocelots sent him from Panama by a friend. The ocelots, bloodthirsty jungle “cats,” purred and curled up like kittens. O'Brien said he probably would have a steel cage built for them at present, but would tuin |! them over to a zoo when they grow . older.

Maxine, who is a brunet and pretty, sings with the 25-piece girl orchestra and the Three Little Words. with brass and with ‘violin, with piano, and with lights going this way and that, and Mr. Spitalny doing the same with a baton. She is the featured singer and she should be. The Three Little Words sing quite melodiously, too. They are better at acting than Miss Maxine, but then, they have more acting to do. They are the close harmony, and the comedy relief,

One number, something or other about a tavern, is embellished by barber-shop harmony that pretty nearly goes to town. They ought to drop around in the suburbs some Saturday night. One of the surprising things about the band is that the brass section disposes of the theory that women can’t play trumpets and They can. Push me a little further and I'd say they do in the Phil Spitalny band. The stage show. which is the best part of the bill, held a full: house at attention yesterday. Mr. Spitalny, who generally has a good reputation as an orchestra leader in ballrooms and on the radio, waves a mean baton, in a friendly way, of

course, at the 25 girl musicians.

And the piano player at the left, the one with the black hair, plays splendidly and looks better.

With “Pee Wee” Hunt, Kenny Sargent and the rest of ‘the Casa Loma lads, Glen Gray will swing into town for a one-night engagement at the Indiana Roof tomorrow night, One of the most popular and “swingin’est” bands in the country, the Casa Loma organization has built up a big fol.

lowing since it first went on the air from the Glen Island Casino, Rye, N. Y., in 1933. I'he players had just changed their name from the Orange Blossom Orchestra to Jean Goldkette’s Casa Loma Or-

chestra, under the direction of

Glen Gray. They took their name from the famous Canadian night spot, Casa Loma, where they played one of their early and most successful engagements.

From the Casino they moved into a New York hotel, and were introduced to a nation-wide audience by way of the weekly CBS Caravan program. Their enga ement, extended from an origihal 13-week contract, ended at the b2ginning of the summer. Since then they have been touring. : The outfit, like Benny Goodman's orchestra, is popular both with dancers and with the -more critical members of the dance .band pro-
