When “Ramona” smooths onto the screen at the Apollo this week, your breath comes in short takes. In striking color before you is a 44,000acre, fertile, lush valley of California. You gould take off your

shoes and stockings and wade |

into it. iIt blows of a Wes what it

trains—it has natural color. And with-such a tempting description of the territory, “Ramona,” a story of the theft of that very land from the Indians, becomes more graphic.

Twice before, at least, it has been

done on the screen. Dolores Del Rio did the title part and you could

& look through this year’s. Hollywood

directory and find no one more suited.

Color Brings lmprovement

But she did it in the black and white film, and the drama then was almost exclusively - Ramona’s personal experiences, incident to her dispossession and her husband's

death, criminally achieved by a “new owner.” Now, with California before you

in all its brilliance and fertility, you

- get a better closeup view of the

+ stakes of the game—the land. Miss Loretta Young, who wears, in the picture, the blackest of black hair, does nicely as Ramona. Don Ameche does very well as Alessandro. Briefly, the well-known story, taken from Helen Hunt Jackson's novel, tells of the marriage of Ramona and Alessandro, their removal to the land of his ancestors where they live happily and without want until the White Man moves in. Dispossessed, they wander about until some kind persons give them shelter from a rain storm. Their child is ill. Alessandro rides for a doctor, gets medicine, and exhausts his horse before he quite reaches home. Thought Horse Thief

In his haste, he borrows a horse from a neighbor who sees him, and . mistakenly sets him down for a . horse thief. The horse owner foljows and, at the very doorsteps, in front 6f Ramona, shoots Alessandro down in cold blood. The story is an item eof United States history that was left out of the text I studied when in grade ~ ‘school. Funny how the movies got onto the situation! ¥ Miss Young, as I-say, is pleasant, ¢ but it is Miss Katherine De Mille, . adopted daughter of the famous dii rector, who is genuine center of at- & traction in the play. — Part Well Acted

i: She has a spirited part and does it with spirit. And she is'one of the most striking ‘young things that hascome to the screen in this or any:

# other show.

; Then there is Pedro De Cordoba ~ who plays Father Salvierderra to

® such great advantage that, in the

. few moments he is seen, hegnearly

- steals the show. His was the only

BY JOE COLLIER “Up there's the star’s room,” see?” I said I did. “Well,” he said, “when Richard Mansfield was here, every once in a while a crash came from that room. Sometimes as many as two or three times a night.” Harry D. Bolton, stage carpenter at English’s, paused long enough to punch the ashes back into the bowl of his pipe. “We found out,” he said, “that Mansfield carried 10 alarm clocks with him. I guess it was 10. And when one of them was wrong, he'd smash it on the floor. Crazy like!” Mr. Bolton, who has been at English’s since 1898 and is antedated there only by the manager, was sitting on a‘ box back stage. ‘Yes, sir! And when he came out of his dressing room, the manager would be there, shooing every one aside.

Sothern Also Temperamental

“ ‘Make way for the governor, he'd say, and every one would have to be quiet and still like Mansfield was the King of Ethiopia,.or something. He and E. H. Sothern were the most lemperamenval of the old ones. “Why one time, I had a young and new gas boy.” Mr. Bolton explained that it was the time when gas from storage tanks was used for the foot lights and some one Had to tend them all the time. “When Sothern came out of his dressing room: this young fellow looked up with wide open mouth and just stared. “Sothern made me fire him on the spot. Of, course, I just transferred him to some place where he wouldn't be seen.” Mr. Bolton tried valiantly to remember a name. brow and he stirred his hair. But he couldn't. : “Anyway,” he said, “he was here once with a whole lot of re from the Lambs Club and they had sort of variety show. Lot's of big names. “When they left here they took

This guy—I wish I could remember his name—took off his clothes, got on top of the engine and tried io take a shower as the water ran info the engine. “I heard about it:© The tried to catch him, but I don't know how it came out. He was a conmedian, I believe. “Who,” - I asked, likable of all the old-timers?” “Maude Adams,” he answered quickly. “She was good for 10 bucks any time she came to town. No tips now, though. The actors think we make too much.” “Of the contemporary stage ple,” I said, “who are the trouble?” “Pontanne and her partner, said. “Ethel Barrymore, too!"

What’s Coming Next?

“What about this season, just coming?” I asked. - “Well, in the old days,” he said, “we would know the shows and the dates by the middle of August, Now I don’t know what's coming. I think this reduction in train fare will bring more road companies around.” “Have you any ¢hildren?” T asked. “Yes, a boy who’s now 30 and is an: engineer. I had him around here ever since I could carry him in my arms and he don't give a dime for the theater. Isn't that wonderful!”
