Helen Jacobs Resumes Play

FOREST HILLS, N. Y., Sept. 10.— A real test for Helen Jacobs and an earnest battle between Frankie Parker and Gregory Mangin were in prospect today as the boys and girls who are still surviving in the national tennis championships set out to fill the semi-final rounds. Miss Jacobs meets up with Gussie Raegener, newcomer from San Francisco in the main match of the day. Helen still is bothered by the thumb which she hurt on Sunday, but the swelling has virtually vanished. While these two Californians are battling in the women’s division, two Jerseyites will fight for a place in the men’s semi-final. Mangin who is supposed to have picked up a cool million in the market during the last few months, is playing some of the best tennis of his career. Parker, often a disappointment, is anything but sure of himself. Winner of the Mangin-Parker set-to will meet the victor in ‘the match between Don Budge of .Oakland, Cal, and John McDiarmid of

equivalent of saying that Mangin or Parker will play Budge. Fourth match of the day will be the remaining quarter-final in the women’s division, Dorothy May Sutton Bundy of Santa Monica, Cal, vs. Helen Pedersen of Stamford, Conn. : Fred Perry of England, the favorite, and Bryan Grant of Atlanta reached the semi-finals of the men’s tourney late yesterday and will face each other tomorrow.
