Building of Dams Likely to i

Two southern Indiana lakes may | be available for Indianapolis out- | -

. door enthusiasts when the 1937 sea- _ son opens, it was indicated today.

F. E. Boucher, recreational special- |

ist at the regional Resettlement Ad- | ministration office here, said today

that construction work on two dams, one in Brown County, the other in Martin County, are -being rushed to completion before cold weather sets

Both dams are locatedyon RA Jand use projects. Their construction primarily is for purpose of water conservation and flood control. “However, we intend to develop the recreational possibilities of these

locations to the greatest extent pos-

sible,” Mr. Boucher said. May Include Bathing Beaches + At Martin County, the lake cre< ated by the dam will cover: some 800 acres. - In some parts it will be

1 about 40 feet deep. Main develop-| : ments planned for this lake will be

in the line of increasing fish and game population. The waters will | be stocked with several varietiesfof | fish and provisions are to be made | for attracting waterfowl. In addition a day pichic area including fireplaces, pure water supply and shelter house, is to be constructed.

houses. “One of the features of recreational developments at the Martin County lake will be an arboretum trail,” Mr. Boucher said. “This trail will enable nature lovers to examine readily a large variety of plants and trees. We plan to set out some foreign plants in a separate’ plot | along the trail.” f

Three Shifts Busy

large winter,

To complete the

project with night activities going on under flood lights. The Brown County lake will be

smaller, probably covering about 125 |

acres. Since the Brown County project adjoins Brown County State Park, where recreational facilities] already are highly developed, work | at this lake will be confined largely | to improvement of fish and. game | conditions. It is probable that a few fire | places and a shelter house will be! built at the Brown County lake and | that a pure water supply will be | provided. Schedules call for completion of both dams before cold weather, | With the dams completed it will] only remain for fall rains and the | spring runoff to fill tHe lakes. Actual plans for recreational de-

velopment have not all been ap- |

proved as yet. However, Mr. Bouch- | er said, it is expected that some of the constructional work can be started this fall.

Administration Interest Cuts Help Borrower, Governor Says.

Progress in reducing interest rates | on petty loans, “a field in which hu- | man suffering is often at stake,” was described by Gov. McNutt in a radio address last night from Station WFBM. The recent action of the department for financial institutions . in slicing $619,000 from interest rates paid by small loan borrowers was cited bythe Governor as the most important of any step yet taken to reduce interest payments. The new rates, effective Oct. 1, call for’ 3 per cent a month for the first $150 of any loan and 1% { per cent for the remaining $150. 3 Cuts Are Made

The Governor emphasized that his administration has made three reductions in petty loan rates since 1933. The first cut the old 3% per | cent a month rate to an equivalent single rate for a maximum $300 | loan to 3.24 per cent; the second | cut the quivalent rate to 2.98 per cent, and the new reduction calls for a 2.61 per cent equivalent rate, he said. A ruling by the commission in | Eoe0 limited the amount of interest o $hat sum which would have been ned had the loan been repaid |in 36 equal installments, the Gov- | ernor said, and stopped such cases as that of a borrower who had paid | $1578 interest on a $300 loan. The Small Loan Act of 1933, which | empowered the commission to in- | vestigate petty loan companies and | from time to time fix interegErates, | was described by: the Governgr, as | the agency which-will allow a'final and equitable adjustment of the | social problem of the small loan.
