Membership gains in 80 of 162 United Brethern Churches in the | White ‘River Conference last year | were reported to the contention at | the University Heights Church by | Dr. J. B. Parsons, conference super- | intentdent for 15 years.

Dr. Parsons’ report, made yester-

day, further stated that churches in|

the conference had reduced their | debts by more than $40,000 and that | more than $30,000 in benevolence |

funds had passed through the treas- | uxy.. Of this amount

$6200 a] designated to Indiana Central Col- | lege’ and $3575 'o the Otterbein | ;- Home. In an address yesterday, the third of the six-day conference, Rev. William H. Todd, Terre Haute, spoke on “Laying Foundations for ‘Christian | America.”

Deplores Present Trend

“We confess, with bowed heads, | that we have not been as faithiul

in maintaining the religious integand defending our religious liberties as were the pioneer builders of our nation,” he said. “America is not yet Christian. Some of us believe that..America is less Christian today than 50 years | ago and that the present unless halted, will lead us into the gloom of a cultural paganism.” Addresses by Mr. Parsons and the Rev. V. O. Weidler were to feature sessions today following committee yeports on foreign missions and

FLOGGING VICTIMS

By United Press WHITEVILLE, N. C., Aug. 28.— A Columbus County grand jury today summoned victims of a white‘hooded * ‘vigilante” band to tell -the of night-riding terrorism in the back country “tobacco road” section. Mrs. Bertha Fowler, 35, and her daughter, Inez, 14, were called to relate how they were dragged from their beds one night, earried to an isolated®swamp, stripped and beaten with leather lashes. Two other victims of the floggers were Grace and Glen Fowler, 16 and 17 years old. The two girls were indicted on morals charges

NOR three years, she had danced through the near East, in smoky, garish cabarets, to earn money to send home to her aging |= mother and younger sisters in the distant little Bavarian town. Now alt this was finished. She could-go home! Home forever! Little wonder that there was a smile on her lips when, at dawn, she fell asleep in her little hotel room—a sleep that brought sweet, rapturous dreams. Why shouldn't she feel the joy of having the rings on her fingers and the red rubies blazing on her white throat? Why not? She would sell them tomorrow. EXT morning, three surly Arabs were hauled before the Governor. The ¢harge—murder. They had killed a young white Woman on the” banks of the river for her jewels, and were caught in the act by a passing patrol. Their guilt was certain. ' | Hassan Bey leaned forward. “Hang them at once!” he said, and motioned with his hand that they be led away. He wasn’t even curious to know whom they had killed. But one of the guards came trotting back. “A thousand pardons, Excellency, I forgot. Here are the jewels for which they ‘killed the girl!” He placed them before the Governor. Hassan Bey looked: at them, and a shudder ran through him. He recognized them at once. They were the jewels he had given the dancing girl in the Golden Moon. How sweet her mouth had been, and how happily she had smiled waen he showered those balefully Sieaming jewels into her white hands!
