Doorknobs; a Spanking Was His Reward.

For 21 of his 25 years, Odes E. ; inson, WIRE's chief engineer, “has been an electrician. Pour-year-old. Odes’ first job was in the nature of an experiment. He wired all the door knobs in the house to a Ford spark coil and got spanked for his ‘trouble. But this initial lack of encourages ment didn’t deter him. He up with the radio industry, operated a wireless spark. coll set when he was 7, and was the ‘neighborhood electrician at 9. Orphaned at 11, young Odes supported himself for the next eight years by selling and servicing ra- ? dio sets. During Mr ;Revinson this time he moved. ‘from his native Whitehill, Tenn. to Tuckerman, Ark. with a stopover in ‘Memphis. Many mountain cabins still have thé: parly vintage ‘sets which Mr. Robihsoni sold’ on’ ‘his excursions inte” the Tennessee and ‘Arkansas hills. He journeyed by automobile, on horseback or on foot, bringing the world to the doors of people who usually saw only about one newspaper a year. -In 1£28 Mr. Robinson sold more radios, according to population per- . centage, than any district salesman in the country. This won him, among other things, a trip to the Radio Manufacturers Association convention in Chicago, : where he met D. E. Kendrick, then manager of station WFIW, Hopkinsville, Ky. Mr. Kendrick gave the young salesman a job as control operator the next year, and promoted him to studio supervisor in six months, They. both came up to Indianapolis in 1933, Mr. Kendrick to manage WIRE (then WKBF), with Mr. Robinson as assistant engineer.

Soon afterward came & promotion, and 22-year-old Odes Robinson ' becanie the youngest chief engineer of a metropolitan broadcasting studio in the United States,

Mr. Robinson at present is at work building - his third transmitting equipment since coming to WIRE. It is for the station’s new 5000-watt permit, and will be ready about Dec. 1. This means, as. on the other similar jobs, that there will be many hours.of work after midnight, cheeking new equipment, “When we bhilt our last transmitter,” says Mr. Robinson, “I went four days without going to bed.” . dianapolis tothe. NBC network, and had charge of the local program to Admiral Byrd and his men at the South Pole.

Engineers. from as far away as. Boston ‘and Ogden, Utah, have made trips here to examine Mr. RobinSon’s “homemade” transmitters, and he receives letters almost daily from other engineers asking information on installation problems. He 1s unmarried, a member. of the Hillcrest Country Club, chairman of the Junior Chamber of Commerce's radio committee, and an honorary life member of the Newark News DX Radio Club.

Noted strong man and publisher, Bernarr MacFadden, will add the role. of radio lecturer to his BUmere ous activities when he series of broadcasts at 8 o'clock oo night on WLW and the Mutual network.. The talks are to be amplifications of his editorials in Liberty Magazine, which he edits.’
