Bankhead Expected to Present
F Scone From Current Stage Show on
Ballew Radio Program at 7:30 P. M.
Theatrical Star Booked for © Guest Appearance Over WLW.
“A scene from her current stage hit, “Reflected Glory,” probably will be Tallulah Bankhead’s contribu tion to the Smith Ballew variety program when she guest stars at 9:30. o'clock . tonight over WLW. It was this play that coaxed Miss Bankhead back to the theater and Brought its author, George Kelly, out of retirement. World premiered In San Francisco 7A recently, “Rei: flected Glory” is i packing them in at present in Los Angeles. “ Joe Cook, pop--ular comie, is ta make his season’s third appearance on this evening's’ Ballew program, ‘4 and other attraca tions will include Miss Bankhead Frances Faye, singer, and Paul Chotteau, French violinist who recently swam the 41 miles from Catalina Island to Santa Monica.
” ” ” When WFBM'S Len Riley goes on the air as the Early Bird Sportsman Monday morning he’ll have the distinction of being the country’s only morning sportcaster—so far as any one at the station knows. Len is to have five minutes of the hour-long Early Bird program at 7:25. The brief sports talk will highlight important items of late news, and bring you scores of night baseball, football and basketball games as the season progresses.
” There is a ready- -made audience 1
of early risers supplied for Len’s new spot. In a year and a half, 9588 persons have mailed in cards or letters requesting membership in
the Early Birds Club. This wasn't |
done by the popular “send in the names of two of your friends” method, either, station officials hasten to explain.
os ” 2 In the first broadcast direct from Spain to the United States since the revolution’s outbreak, Floyd Gibbons
will give an eye-witness account of
hostilities during the Magic Key program on WLW at noon tomorrow. He is to speak from station EAQ, Madrid. Shortwave listeners who have been tuning in on EAQ the last few weeks in the hope of first-hand information have been disappointed.
The station has been keeping on |g:
with its children’s programs, Spanish lessons, concerts and so on, as if nothing were happening.
Good Music
v BY JAMES THRASHER Five and a half hours of symphonic, chamber, choral and recital music are on the CBS calendar for this week-end, with most of the programs available over the local outlet, WFBM. In the matter of serious music, as well as along most lines of radio entertainment, the junior of the two coast-to-coast networks has gained a distinct advantage over its elder rival.
Howard Barlow, whose “Every-|
body’s Music” series:-has proved him a shrewd and original program builder as well as an artistic interpreter, has prepared another promising hour’s entertainment for the 1 p. m. broadcast. on WFBM tomorrow. As the piece de resistance we are to have Stravinsky's “The Fire Bird,” first of the composer’s three famous ballets, and long a favorite. Other offerings will be the “Cockaigne” overture of the late Sir Edward Elgar, whose American popularity, despite British enthusiasm, still rests upon his “Pomp and Circumstance” marches and the oratorio, “The Dream of Gerontius”; “Summer - Night on the River,” by Elgar's less bombastic compatriot, Frederick Delius; and Enesco’s “Poeme Roumaine.” Chicago Orchestra to Play Replacing. the Philadelphia Orchestra, Clarence’ Evans and: the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. will ‘be on the air at 7 o'clock tomorrow night in an hour concert also carried locally. Scheduled are the
' overture to .Smetana’s. “The Bart-
ered Bride”; Abert’s transcription of the Bach Chorale and Fugue in G Minor; the Goldmark “Rustic Wedding” symphony, and the Brahms-Dvorak Hungarian Dances Nos. 17 to 21. At 10:30 p. m. WFBM will bring you a half hour of music by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, under Alfred Hertz. Proceeding counter clockwise, we find two recitals scheduled by WFBM this evening. The first, at §:30 p. m, will bring Alexander
