Though accompanists tradition- Sod ; ally are unsung heroes, Emil Seidel, = EE former Indianapolis pianist and ”y present collaborator with Maj. Bowes, seems to get his share of attention. We hear, though, not from the reticent Mr. Seidel, thaf he hires two secretaries to take care of his fan mail and requests for autographed pictures. He has earned the friendship of many of the Sunday night hopefuls with his helpful. suggestions and kindly assistances through their sessions of “mike fright.”
Good Music
BY JAMES THRASHER
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, heard last winter and spring - over WIRE on Thursday : nights, is to have a new day, hour and network beginning Sunday Sept. 13. Their same sponsors have bought a 45-minute program period (a quarter-hour increase over the former series) on CBS, at noon, with WFBM bringing the music to local listeners. Many who heard the Pittsburghers’ broadcast during the past season have wished that some, Iccal “angel” might promote our own symphonists in the same manner. Musically, the Pittsburgh orchestra has nothing on the Indianapolis organization. Both bands have operated along similar financial lines— at least until the Pittsburgh players’ radio debut. The Pittsburgh Symphony, of course, was one of the pioneer orchestras of the Middle West. Under the successive leaderships of Frederick Archer, Emil Pauer and Victor Herbert, it reached its zenith at the turn of the century. The orchestra disbanded, however, in 1909, and was not revived until 10 years ago. | 1!

chestra’s artistic contribution, possess an accurate estimate of the steel city’s musical activities. The past year's broadcasts likewise provided a stepping stone for Reed Kennedy, baritone soloist with the orchestra on several occasions. Mr. Kennedy, a young Pittsburgh business man, had given himself a year in which to prove to himself, family and friends, that music really was his field. His broadcasts last season have resulted in seven return engagements in the orchestra's new spries; a series for a Pittsburgh canning company, beginning Sept. 2, and possibly another commercial with an orchestra under Gustav -‘Haenschen's direction.
Burns’ Characters Real, Paper States
Maybe some of you Bob Burns ‘fans thought that Bob's various relatives, Grandpa Needham, Aunt Jenny and Uncles Hink, Meadors, ~ Enoch, Collins, Bob Cook and the rest were figments of the Burnsian ‘imagination. . Well, they aren't. They are, in fact, real live persons, and we can prove it by the Bob Burns edition of the Van Buren (Ark. Press-Argus, ~. Which reached our desk: this morning. The Press-Argus was established in 1859 and, so the masthead tells us, is the oldest weekly in Arkansas. Hugh and J. C. Park are the owners; Hugh Park is edi-tor-publisher; Ruie Ann Park is news editor and G. Leo Park is plant foreman. "The edition

sparkling story of Bob's life (unsigned), called “Up With the Bazooka.” There are interviews with his first school teacher, his oldest neighbors, the man who sold Bob his first pair of pants, and Uncle Tom, the Negro who ran the ferryboat, Caroline, over to Fort Smith, and who used to take the future comedian riding. f And pictures!
