Springer, Townsend Both ‘Dry’ Personally, York Points - Out.

BY ARCH 'STEINEL The Indiana Anti-Saloon League has not decided officially just who to support for Governor in the November election, Supt. L. E. York said today. Mr, York said reports have reached him that both M. Clifford

Townsend, Democrat, and Raymond |

8. Springer, Republican, are “drys” personally. With this draw verdict, the league chief hinted the organization, is in a quandry. The league is interested intensely in the gubernatorial election, Mr. York said, and also in the January meeting, of the General Assembly, when the league is to open its drive for a local option law in Indiana.

‘Big Stick’ Opposed

“We don’t want a Governor who will wield the ‘big stick’ on the Legislature and attempt to frustrate local option,” Mr. York said. “At least not one like Gov. McNutt. The only local option that Indiana has is the State Alcoholic Beverages Commission named by Gov. McNutt,” he said. The Anti-Saloon League is to open ifs drive for local option in September when league members interview candidates for state Representative on the two major party tickets. . Mr. York charged that liquor licenses were granted in Indiana in somes cases despite overwHelming protests. “Seventy-five per cent. of the voters in North Manchester petitioned the present beverages commission to prevent the granting of the licenses but the licenses were issued,” Mr. York said. Mr. York criticised a recent radio address by Gov. McNutt in which the Governor is purported to have said “something must be done to curb the drunken driver.” “It was only a short time ago when he declared that ‘Indiana really has a temperance program,’ ” Mr. York said. Mr. York and Indiana field men of the organization are to meet with superintendents from other states at Lake Winona Aug. 25 and 26.

Mr. York said methods of cam-|

paigning for local option in the variaus states would be discussed at

the sessions.
