a cabin fpspired the fliming of “Legong,” a romance of Bali, which is to open at Loew’s Friday. When Gaston Glass and Marquis Henri de 1a Falaise set out for the South Sea islands to make an allTechnicolor picture, the plans called for a travelogue of. three reels, Traveling on a slow ocean freight- . er, the film makers were captivated by a song their cabin boy kept singing. Around this song was woven the story of Legong, which means “dance of the virgins.”

Heroines Hard to Find

The first difficulty was in discovering young girls with attractive faces and mature figures who did not have their teeth filed tp sharp points. Then followed a long search for an athletic type island boy. The male population of Bali do no manual labor and never exercise very vigorously. When the girl and boy were selected, the Marquis had to reconcile the difference in caste between “th principals and submit the story for approval of the leaders of the high caste. Several objections on ritualistic points’ were eventually smoothed out by the producers.

Players Own Bosses The interpreter employed by the

movie directors rebelled at taking:

instructions and told the players to do what he thought was best. Ignorant .of the language, the ‘Marquis and Mr. Glass were con. fused for some time by the acting of the native cast, which was not at all according to the orders they gave the interpreter. In order to solve the problem Mr. ‘CGilass began acting out the parts himself so the natives could imitate him

~ Bhowers and cloudy days proved to be a nuisance for a while until the directors learned that one of the village priestesses would make the sun shine for a guilder a day.

Distinction in Ages

One day Mr. Glass asked to have eight beautiful native girls sent to the market place for a scene. When he was ready to photograph the . sequence, he saw eight youngsters between the ages of 8 and 10 years. “Those are children!” stormed Mr. Glass. “I want ‘girls of about 16 years.” “Oh,” the interpreter said, want old ladies.” The story of the film is centered pund Poutou, a. native girl who “falls.in. love with Nyong, a newcomer The cabin boys’ song

Song of Love

The words of the song are: “It is writ, O Maid of Bali! Should love enter thine eyes And go to thy heart beware— “For should he whom you now chosest Not return thy love— The Gods will frown, and Disgrace will befall thee.” Saplak, the half sister of Poutou, is the seductive Lillith of the picture who attracts the straying attentions of Nyong. The picture includes many scenes of the bizarre ritualistic dancing d customs of the natives.

I= been married for two years, A but men still don’t make sense. Especially my husband, Burt—and Burt's brother, Neal. But I'll: let you judge for yourself. Naturally, after I had caught Burt off his guard and married him, I went wife-hunting. for my broth-er-in-law. HOLLYWOOD, Cal, Aug. 12—The movies import a ton of weather yearly like tinned beef or asparagus. Every studio has an assortment

| of -it laid away in the cellar for emergencies,

The other day a projection room man, ran off 10 cans of weather, including some choice blizzards, winds, rains in a dozen varieties from cloudbursts to fine Scotch mists, and clouds.

The. lack of clouds in Hollywood

is a source of much annoyance when an English story is being filmed, so clouds and sky are brought in for background. Last year Paramount sent a crew to France and Spain. to film five miles of scenery.” Of “the 70 cowboy films made last year, every one but four was made under a roof. Wesdther, not beit:z subject to the orders of the director, is hardly ever right for a picture. It just can’t be controlled outdoors. Studios, Not Public, Forget Good Work, Quillan Declares.

¥ United Press : HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 12. — The public never forgets a good pere formance; it’s the producers’ who forget,” says Eddie Quillan, the little Scottish lad who unofficially stole “Mutiny on the Bounty” from its featured stars. “We're still getting letters from fans to prove it,” Eddie said. “Papa wi show pa Joseph Quillan produced a a x of letters and commendatory comment of movie critics, but since the Quillans were being intere viewed in a closed automobile with the sun beating down on if at a 90-degree clip, he was discouraged from reading all of them.

System Is Blamed

“Producers have a peculiar sys : tem,” Eddie said. “For instance, an actor does a good job and the public likes it. The producer is likely to wait a year or so before giving the actor another chance in a good role. Then, because the actor hasn't done anything lately, they won't put him in it. In other words, they don’t give him work, then won't give him work because he hasn't been working.” Papa Quillan, who manages Ede die's career as well as his salary— “Eddie's a good boy; he tells me I can keep his money better than he can” — considers the 27-year-old son’s “Mutiny” success & moral victory. Eddie ‘has ‘been acting since he was 7, going on the stage with his parents and eight brothers and sise ters. He made comedies for the screen, starting with Mack Sennett
