ENA INALLY Qs NEW DEALERS
0 Mourning Is Heard as He Moves Over to Join Father Coughlin.
‘BY RUTH FINNEY Times Special Writer
WASHINGTON, Aug. 11.—Sen- . ator Rush D. Holt’s final desertion of the New Deal for the opposition group of Father Coughlin is causing no mourning. in New Deal circles. In the course of one year in national politics the young West Virginian has probably alienated more erstwhile friends than any man in public life. In his briet career the 31-year-old Senator has made a complete circuit of the political paddock. He ran for election as a New Dealer and a friend of organized labor, and won largely through the efforts of the United Mine Workers of America.” He thought Liberty Leaguers were “worse than Communists” Senator M. M. Neely (D., W.“Va.) supported his candidacy and supported his right to.a seat in the Senate, though Holt was under age when eiected. He was eventually seated with overwhelming Democratic backing. 8ix months later Holt was win- - ning a name for himself as the most caustic critic of New Deal relief policies. He was talking West Virginia patronage to the exclusion of all other matters. He was leading a conservative attempt io unseat Senator Neely in the primaries, and was allied with local Liberty Leaguers for that purpose.
Blocks Coal Bill
“Finally, in the closing days of the Seventy-fourth Congress, Holt filibustered: to death the Guffey-Vin-son coal bill, pet legislative project of the United Mine Workers. The United Mine Workers’ Journal called . him . “the “dirtiest traitor of all.”
