4 Wil Court May Be Destined
ri Wide Popularity on Networks,
Maj. Bowes to Change Sponsorship AL JOLSON'S NEW LEADING LADY
‘The Jazz Singer’ Scheduled for Radio Theater Performance.
Those with ears to the ground along the radio front claim that the Good Will Court, which is to go on the air on Sunday night, Sept. 20, for Maj. Bowes’ present sponsors, is destined to usurp the popularity of the “amateur hour.” On the air for.a little more than a year, and on a small network, the court has built up a large fol-
lowing. Its listeners, moreover, are |
not averse to expressing themselves regarding its merits. Commendations have come from: prominent members of the New York bar, who objected at first to judges lending their services to the broadcasts, and from public officials. Says John J. Bennett Jr., attorney general of New York State: “There is an axiom in law which says that ignorance of the law is. no.excuse, I Have always believed this to be somewhat harsh, in view of the little opportunity afforded the public to become acquainted with the technicalities and complexities of the law.
“Through the interpretation of
individual problems your audience is placed in touch with the application of legal remedies to pariular situations. “The ideh of the broadcast is a most humane one since here is provided a great system of public education. The average is acquainted with the just and helpful side of the law rather than the ever-pres-ent punitive aspect. Here the citizen is made most conscious of the fact that the law is both a sword and a shield. The state must necessarily benefit by the great public service which explains and elucidates its most vital organ—the law.”

Meanwhile Maj. Bowes, ‘despite his project's predicted demise, is to go into his new Thursday night spot next month at a salary estimated at twice his present one. His new auto-making sponsor has been content to carry on the program with-
out altering its present setup, ex-|:
cept to do away with an announcer and let the Major carry the whole show. He also has been intrusted with the selling of all four makes of his sponsor's product. Ed Wynn, who plugged one of these cars this sea"son, is “at lberty” since last Tuesday's broadcast. Veteran of 35 years on the stage and five years of radio,
Ed was one of the ether’s most
popular comedians a few years back. The grind of a new show—and a funny one—every week is exhausting, even to an old trouper like Ed Wynn. His slip in popularity seems another indication that straight theatrical technique in comedy does not always translate into an effective microphone medium. 3 ® # 8 The picture sthat dealt the death blow to silent. movies, “The. Jazz Singer,’ is to have its first radio performance at 7 o'clock tonight on Cecil B. De Mille’s Radio Theater, over WFBM. “The Jazz Singer,” as pr will re. call, was the first sound film, set box office records that re unbroken. 8 ” o Apparently the ‘only fault public found with Dr. Allan Dafoe’s talks on his two Monday evening Contented Hour programs was that he didn’t talk enough. So he is to make an added appearance a week from tonight. In Qctober the famous Callander physician will start a series of his own, sponsored by a drug company,

Though difficulties of reception still make international rebroadcasts more of an interesting novelty than satisfying entertainment, there is little reason to doubt that improved mechanical equipment will make European broadcasts an important part of our listening life in the future. : In the serious music field we are hearing an increasing number of these trans-Atlantic programs. The NBC-Blue ‘network has scheduled another tomorrow at 1 p, m., bringing a promenade concert from Queen's Hall in London. These concerts were founded in 1805 by the late Robert Newman, and have been Lconducted since their inception by "Sir Henry Wood. William Walton, noted English composer, is to be featured tomorTow as composer and conductor. The first half of the program will be devoted to his works, and he is to conduct two of them, the “Portsmouth Point” overture, and the “First Symphony.” :

Fans who have missed Karen Morley (above) since her appearance with Shirley Temple in “The Littlest Rebel,” will be glad to welcome ‘the blond actress in one of her infrequent. radio performances tonight. She is to have the feminine lead opposite Al Jolson in the first ajr version of his epoch-marking picture, “The Jazz Singer,” on the
Radio Theater program at 7 o’clock tonight over WFBM.
