PEE-WEE HARDY, seated on the curb In front of the Roscoe house saw Mugs Andrews start up ‘the driveway, “Hey!” he sont, “Herb ain't home. There ain't nobody home but

“Ah, rats!” Mugs turned back and Sropped to the curb beside Pee-

“Why don’t you go on in and have a talk with your friend Arty?” Pee-Wee teased. a piece for you.” Muggs drew. his mouth down at the corners. “Oh, yeah? Say, that : butter-fingers better never try to play the piano for me! The. piano! That's all he can play. Did you hear me tell him where (0 get off this afternoon?” “When he dropped that ball at first base?” “Yeah—can't even play baseball. How a swell guy like Herb Roscoe can have a sissy brother like him’s beyond me!” * “Say, look who's comin’!” PeeWee changed the subject suddenly. Muggs looked around. “Oh; boy! Cory!” “And Liddy Pisher,” Pee-Wee added.

“You can skip her,” Mugs com- ;

mented. “Hello, boys!” Cory greeted them. “We're pulling candy on my front porch after supper. Come on cver. Tell Herb to come, too.” t

IN'T this sweet?” Mugs said to Cory, as they sat on her porch steps that evening. He held up his hands, mired in molasses candy. “Is that all that’s sweet?” Cory said coyly. “All but you,” Mugs returned, and Cory giggled. “How long you gotta’ pull this stuff?” Pee-Wee yelled from thé depths of the porch. “Long as you want to,” Cory replied. “Start eatin’ any time you get ready.” “Mine's already gone,” Herb Roscoe announced. “And now he’s eatin’ mine!” one of the girls wailed. There was silence save for the munching and chewing. Then, the sound of a iano drifted over from the Roscoe house | next door. Cory began to sway back and forth to the music. “Arty sure can play that piano,” she declared. “Isn’t that smooth?” Then, ‘on sudden impulse, “Say Herb, let's go over on your porch and dance!” “Let's!” two or three of the girls echoed. They all trooped over to the Roscoe porch. 8: 8 ” EE, you're a swell dancer!” Mugs commented with enthusiasm, as he guided Cory over the porch floor. ~ “Think so?” Cory said archly. Then, glancing through the window at Arty at the piano: “Arty’s a swell player, too. You don't need an orchestra with him around!” “But he’s such a sissy!” Mugs objected. “You just think so because nes got curly hair, and spends his time practicing scales,” Cory defended. “I'm gonna‘ ask him to play for my party.” “When's that?” “After my cousin Althea gets here. She's coming next week, you know.” A little later, Cory remarked, “I wonder if Arty isn’t getting tired. Maybe Liddy could play awhile, and he could rest or dance.”

“Maybe he'd play!“

Daily Short Story—— .

“Say, that guy wouldn't come within dancin’ distance of a girlt” Mugs declared. “He might fool you some day, if the right girl comes along.” “Who'd want that sissy, anyway?” Mugs scoffed Cory was thoughtful a moment. “You know, my cousin Althea might hit it off,” she said. “She's musical, too.” » ” E gods!” Mugs onnen. a3 he leaned against the porch rail on the night of Cory’s party. “Liddy Fisher's been at the piano for hours now. She's terrible! You cant dance to that b Pa y “Oh, T know! But there's no one

else to play,” Cory wailed. “I wanted |

Arty to like Althea, but I didn’t expect him to lose his head completely. He's ruining the party! I've tried to get him back to the piano, but he's set on dancing with Althea. Can't you think of some way of separating them?” she appealed to Mugs. “Please,” Muggsie, do something!” Mugs thought a minute.

“Okay~I'll do something, if you 1can get Althea away from ‘him for

a minute .or two,” he said, with. a gleam in his eye. “He probably thinks he’s a big shot, sweeping the visiting girl off her feet. "He'll be glad to go back to his music when 1 get finished with him!” . “Oh, you wouldn't hurt’ him!” Cory said, in sudden alarm. : “No, just put him in his place.

You go in and make some excuse to get Althea, and then bring her |: ‘—suddenly—Arty’'s fist shot out in

out here.” As Cory disappeared into the house, Mugs laughed shortly. . “Hey, Pee-Wee! Come here!” he called.

“What you “want?” Pee - Wee

ugs inwardly congratulated . “That should cool his ardor, |

ARTY was at the piano when Pee-Wee came in. The crowd had persuaded him to relieve Liddy “for just one piece” while he waited for Althea to return from wherever Cory had taken her. Pee-Wee leaned across the corner of the piano. “I hate to tell you, Arty,” he began, “but”—his voice lowered so that only Arty heard. KASLYS ba hands stopped short on the

“What did you say?” he" de:

“I Said,” repeated Pee-Wee, “that I just seen Mugs kissin’ Althea in the porch swing.” Arty’s jaw: set, and his eyes narrowed. “Where 48 - he now?” . he asked, :

“Still on the porch, I guess,” » PeeWee replied. » ” # 7, T was dark on the porch near the swing. Cory and Althea had now gone upstairs, by the back way. After they left, Mugs had moved from the swing to the railing, where ‘he sat balancing himself against a post, his legs drawn up before him, his arms about his knees. He was chuckling to himself when
