More Than $1,250,000 Was for Wages, Estimate of James D. Adams.
The State Highway Commission paid contractors $2,022,088 for construction on the state highway system during June, James D. Adams, commission chairman, announced today. Approximately three-fourths of this amount was for work on highways and the remainder for bridge and grade separationn construction, all of which is a part of the comMission's 1936 program, Mr. Adams said. About 60 per cent of the payments were made with Federal funds allocated to Indiana for state highway construction and improvement. It is estimated that more than $1,250,000 of the amount paid to contractors was in turn paid by them in wages for direct and indirect labor. Reports to the Highway Commission in June showed more than 9000 workers directly employed by contractors engaged in construction work on the state highway system, Surveys, plans and other details connected with the commission's
