‘Superintendent Ziegler described the celebration as “the greatest day in the year, next to Christmas—for the youngsters.”
Home Started in 1867 - Initial steps to erect the General Protestant Orphans’ Home were taken by members of Germania Lodge No. 129, 1. O. O. F., after learning of the successful operation of such an institution at Cin-
. einnatl.
On Aug. 5, 18687, officers were elected and an organization formed to provide such a home for Indianapolis. Friederich Thomas was chosen president; Heonrich Mankedick, vice president; Carl Schmidt, financial secretary, and
- W. Schoppenhorst, treasurer.
A log cabin served as the first orphanage. Two sisters were admitted to the home and lived in the cabin until 1871, when new quarters were completed. The middle section of the present structure was erected at that time, and the
* north wing was added later.
Fire Damaged Property
A-fire damaged the structure in| 1883, but buildings were repaired and additions were made. The home now has 13 acres of ground and is supported entirely | by membership dues and by be- | guests and endowments. A vegetable garden provides much of the food necessary to: maintain the dining room. Children are admitted without regard to church affiliations, and
. are educated in public schools here.
A staff. of six persons assists Mr. Ziegler.
