Rudy Vallee Soon May Say, Farewell to Present Sponsors.

Irvin 8. Cobb described his recent metamorphosis into a movie actor as “reaching the bottom of the final abyss,” so perhaps he will regard his radio appearance tonight as a step toward a higher realm. Anyway, he’s to drop in for a fourth at bridge on the Caravan Hour at 7:30 p. m. on WFBM, for a part in George S. Kaufman's skit, “If Men Played Bridge Like Women Do.” It will be quite a noted foursome around the bridge table: Mr. Kaufman making his debut as a radio actor in his own story; George Jessel, former radio and stage comedian, now a Hollywood script writer; Rupert Hughes, the program’s master of ceremonies, and Mr. Cobb. Mr. Kaufman is qualified to rib the great American indoor s or any other national institution— on the basis of past successes. He has lampooned the movies, politics, Tin Pan Alley and the Broadway stage as co-author of “Once in a Lifetime,” “Of Thee I Sing,” “June Moon" and “The Royal Family.” Mr. Hughes is to continue in his role of master of ceremonies on the broadcast, and Mr. Jessel is slated to “double in brass” with a monologue and song. The four gentlemen really promise to play out a hand in the best feminine style. Looks like we might have a grand slam in comedy entertainment. x #2 p

Two “specialty” bands are to take over Wayne King's WIRE program spots for the hext four weeks beginning at 6:30 tonight with Horace Heidt's company. At the same hour tomorrow night Hal Kemp's orchestra and singers will go to bat for the “waltz king,” who has gone to Los Angeles for a vacation.

Last-minute bulletins from the . radio front inform us that Rudy Vallee soon may say farewell to his present sponsors, after seven years of harmonious dealings. Rudy is scheduled to move up a night to the spot now occupied by Frank Fay. Meanwhile, according to White Way operatives, the Vallee sponsors will retain their present hour for a “super-colossal” newscasting program, expanding the idea now being tested on the Vallee broadcast.

8 ” =

Our informer also tells us that New Jersey's Gov. Harold Hoffman apparently means {to press that slander suit against the energetic commentator, Boake Carter. It seems that the Governor has reached out to serve papers on Mr. Carter through a Camden (N. J.) bank, affiliated with the newscaster’s Philadelphia statio fl There are plenty of vicarious adventures for us sit-by-thefire listeners on the “Three-Minute Thrill” portion of WLW'’s cigaret-sponsored program at 6 o'clock tonight. Charles Martin's guest this evening is to be J. E. “Undersea” Williamson, up from Florida, where he is experimenting on a new diving bell.” He is to tell of a hand-to-fin pattle with g shark which bit his air hose during one of his trips “down under.” Also‘ present will be the. regular company of Leo Reisman and his band, Phil Duey, baritone; Loretta Clemens and Johnnie the Call Boy.

: 1 In the world of music, too, the

inexorable parade continues, leaving. in its wake innumerable esteemed compositions which are forgotten by a new generation. Very often, however, a single aria, chorus or instrumental number survives a bygone opera or symphony. So we have the so-called Largo from Handel's opera “Xerxes,” the Toccata from a forgotten sonata of Paradies, overtures and arias from the operas of Weber and Rossini, and the “Panis Angelicus” from Franck's Mass in A. This latter mass is to be heard in its entirety from St. Paul's Chapel, Columbia University, over WFBM at 2:45 p. m. tomorrow. The Columbia Summer Session Choir will perform the seldom-heard work, under the direction of Henry Doersam. Assisting’ will be Joseph Emonts, ‘cellist of the New, York Philharmonic-Symphony Society; Caspar Reardon, harpist, and Paul Zuydhoek, organist. The chorus is composed of teachers from all parts of the country attending the university's summer school. 2 = 2

** The‘youthful and - gifted pianist; Miss Muriel Kerr, is to be soloist-on the Columbia Cencert Hall A halfhour at 2 p. m. tomorrow afternoon, via WFBM. Miss Kerr's most recent broadcast was with Howard Barlow and the CBS Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Grieg's A Minor Piano Concerto and the Dohnanyi “Variations on a Nursery Tune.” Her program tomorrow is an‘nounced as two Bach-Busoni Choral Preludes; a “Song Without Words” - by Mendelssohn; the Scherzo from the same composer's “M . Night's Dream” music, in Ernest ‘Hutcheson’s arrangement: two . of the Schumann “Fantasy Pieces” and the Chopin F Minor Ballade.
