1-Blondell to Be Heard "in Radio Drama on Saturday - Spot.
: Willard. Robinson, that old “evanst of rhythm,” will lend his inim-
pning’s Saturday Swing Session WFBM at 6\o'clock: With him t to be Carl Kress and Dick Mc-
jonough, swing guitarists, to comte Bunny Burrigan’s guest roster, Although he fits right into such “jam session” as the Burrigan broadcast, Willard Robison has not changed his style of music since ‘his radio career began. No one seems to have imitated successfully " his suave arrangements and instrumental combinations, which emphasize flute, oboe and bass clarinet. And then there are Willard’s own piano playing and singing. ~ He will not appear as band leader tonight, but is to sing two of his ‘own compositions, “Barrel House” nd “Religion in Rhythm.” They say that his years as a trooper. in small-time vaudeville and medicine shows through the deep South account for the thoroughness with which he has captured the mood of Negro music. 73 x = = A week after the Louis-Schmeling pout, Frank Fay had Joe Louis before the microphone for an interview. And tonight, just for contrast, . Smith Ballew is to present\the diminutive “Baby” Arizmendi, world’s featherweight champ, who also will submit to questions for the benefit of radio listeners. The pint-sized fighter will defend his title against Henry Armstrong early next week. ‘Headlining the Ballew show will be Joan Blondell in a version of “Dinner at Eight,” with Paul Harwey, of the original Broadway cast, |; ~ playing opposite her. Others are to be Comedian Bert Lahr fm a return appearance, and Ella Logan, whom you may remember as the girl who used to sing “hot” tunes with a Scotch accent on Abe Lyman’s broadcast, She’s been signed by Universal to star in “Everybody Sing.” _ The broadcast, as usual, is on WLW ‘at 7:30 p. m. ” n n That new Fred Astaire series, _ which this department mentioned a few days ago, will come to you over WIRE at 7:30 p. m, on Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 8. Another new fall series which WIRE is to carry is that of Louise Massey and the Westerners, which- is to have a 7
o'clock Tuesday spot, with the takeoff Sept. 29.
The latter program is to be a music-drama combination, much like the Show Boat broadcasts on ~ which the troupe appeared. And their starring premiere, incidentally,
will occur almost a year to the day.
_ since they broke into big time _ radio.
Good Music BY JAMES THRASHER For only the second time this season, if memory serves correctly, local dialers may hear the Third Symphony of Brahms. [It is to be ~ played by the New York Philhar-monic-Symphony Orchestra, with Jose Iturbi conducting, and is to be . heard at 7:15 p. m. tomorrow on WGN. _ This infrequency of performance is rather strange, since many pre-
fer it to the other three Brahms |.
symphonies. Surely it is. among the happiest and most poetic of the composer's utterances. . The rest of the concert’s broadcast portion will be taken up by the playing of Borodin's “The Steppes of Central Asia” and Stravinsky's “Pire Bird.” Those who have read Tschaikowsky's letters will remember the one to Frau von Meck in which he catalogues his musical compatriots, condemning Borodin

A glance over scheduled week-end programs shows that Brahms and the Russians are to come in for their share of attention. The Robin - Hood Dell concert irom Philadelphia, from 6:30 until 8:30 o'clock tomorrow night, on WFBM, is to offer the Brahms Fourth Symphony, Tschai‘kowsky’s “Andante Cantabile” and the “Sailor's Dance” from the “Red Poppy” by Gliere. - Howard Barlow is to do Bala‘kirefl’s “Russia” during WFBM's ‘broadcast of “Everybody's Music” at ‘1 p. m. tomorrow, and the Goldman Band will play an all-Russian progn” WLW ai 6:30 o'clock to-
