S GR F STATEHOLSE CLEANED DAILY

Superintendent Blames Wind Blowing Trash, Drought for Bad Appearance.

5 » The 10 acres of Statehouse lawn are sprinkled every night and the grounds are cleaned every day, Wil“Ham D. Gill, building and grounds superintendent, said today in commenting on pictures in The Times

yesterday showing the lawn dirty

and dry. "This lawn looks like this every time we have hot weather and no rain,” Mr. Gill said, “and the reason is that the ground, a short distance “from the top, is filled with rocks, tin cans and other rubbish. Even when it rains hard the lawn soaks the water up like a sponge.”

Two Water Nightly

Two, men with 1000 feet of hose and 17 sprinklers water the lawn every night, Mr. Gill said, and others attempt to keep it clean every day. “This is a dirty neighborhood,” Mr. Gill said, “and paper from the paper stock houses in the vicinity blows over here constantly.” Next year Mr. Gill hopes to put new topsoil and fertilizer on the lawn. More men and a larger appropriation will be necessary to keep the lawn looking as it should the superintendent said.

Pay it all in one lump, and then enjoy your vacation.” “It will have to be less this year,” Ann told him. “We had to take a cut in the office.” “Oh, I'm sorry!” he said. He looked at her for several moments. “Gee, that’s tough! I mean—just last week I got a raise. When I get back from my vacation—it's my first in six years—I'm to be ad-| vanced to the “position of travel consultant.” He smiled a little wearily. “It’s just a title in the office, but it pays more.
