Plug Upward Despite Ills

Blimb Within Game of Cubs - as Winford Steps Into Pitching Break.

By United Press NEW YORK, July 31.—Frankie Prisch had his St. Louis Cardinals " a game of the National League ceiling today despite troubles enough to take the heart out of a less hardbitten bunch. . Only .a gas house gang could take _ the blows the Frischmen have suffered and stay in the thick of the fight. | Paul Dean, who was expected to “garry about a third of the pitching load, is lost indefinitely with a sore arm. Dizzy Dean is terribly overworked. Stu Martin, sensational rookie infielder, is laid up with ‘stomach trouble. But .the Cards keep plugging along. ~~ There’s not another team in the Jeague that doesn’t boast stronger pitching than the Cardinals. Besides Dizzy (Double Duty) Dean, there are only Jim Winford, a gem of a rookie; undependable Roy - Parmelee; another question mark in - Adolph Heusser; and a trio of old men by the names of Jess Haines, George Earnshaw and Flint Rehm. To offset spotty. pitching the Cardinals have their famed fight and a batting punch featuring the bludgeons of Joe Medwick, Johnny Mize and Pepper Martin. Winford handcuffed the opposition with four hits for his sixth victory as the Cardinals defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers, 7-0, yesterday. The first-place Chicago Cubs Jost their second straight to the New York Giants, 3-1, to have their two-game margin of leadership cut in half. Pittsburgh defeated the Boston Bees, 5-3, in 11 innings. - Cincinnati and Philadelphia split @& doubleheader, the Reds taking the opener, 5-0, and the Phillies the nightcap, 5-4. The first-place New York Yankees had their American League lead clipped to 72 games, losing to Detroit, 5-4, in 10 in- - nings as runnerup Cleveland defeated Washington, 11-8. Fourthplace Chicago defeated Philadelphia, 7-4, and moved to within half a game of Boston which lost to St. ~ Louis, 4-3.

Yesterday's Hero: Kiki Cuyler, Cincinnati outfielder, who hit eight successive singles as the Reds divided a doubleheader with Philadelphia.

In announcing the tourney for May 24-30, Jacobus said that although it was the earliest the event . had ever been scheduled, that the date should be popular with pros and enable the champion to make the most of his title. Hoag Responds.

to Treatment

By United Press

DETROIT, July 31.—Condition of Myril Hoag (above), New York Yankee outfielder, who was injured in Tuesday's game with the Detroit Tigers at Navin Field, was reported “favorable” at Harper Hospital today. Hoag underwent an operation last night for relief of a brain injury suffered when he collided with Joe DiMaggio while chasing a fly ball. Physicians said that Myril’s condition was not serious, and after the operation announced that he had responded to treatment. The operation was performed by Dr. Frederick Schreiber, brain specialist. He said it was necessitated to remove fluid from outside the players’ brain.

Light-Heavy vy Champ Forced to Make Late Rally - for. Decision.

By United Press H, July 31.-—Light-heavyweight champion John Henry Lewis rallied in the late rounds to defeat slugging Al Gainer of New Hgven, Conn. last night in a nontitle bout that brought 20,000 fans

to Forbes Field. Gainer, swinging hard left hooks from a peculiar crouch, had the best of the going until the eighth round and once or twice seemed headed for a knockout .victory. Lewis, boxing carefully, came out in the ninth as the aggressor, broke the skin over Gainer’s left eye and began a vicious counter attack that earned him the unanimous decision. The heavy-hitting Gainer, ranked as No. 1 challenger for Lewis’ title, entered the ring at 177.pounds, one less than the champion and two over the weight limit. He did the early leading and had Lewis backing away, opening an old cut over the title-holder’s right eye in the sixth. But with the crowd yelling for a . knockout, Lewis cautiously boxed himself out of danger, then reeled to his cogner. In the eighth, the tide suddenly turned in favor of the champion. Gainers’ punches lost some of their steam and Lewis appeared stronger, having much the hest of the infighting. Both Negroes punched savagely in

the twelfth round “until Gainer tired. °

‘RE anticipating a healthy family squabble for the club out at Coffin during the next few weeks, so President Ken Hoy has called a council of

testants may knock off their 36hole trial any time before Sunday, Aug. 9. Prexy Hoy was naming an impromptu list of the boys who are likely prospects for the championship battle royal and he recled off Phil Renforth, Weiland, O. E. Cummins, Bernie Bray, Charlie Boswell, Bobby Dale and Dick Keil. Of course there are others, but it was most noticeable that he overlooked Bill Reed and George Petersen, city champion and runner-up, respectively.

% 8 = Perhaps Ken figures it’s so apparent where the two stand they are automatically included in the .list. It surely couldn’t be that at they are ineligible, or something akin, What's more, Chief Hoy didn’t even mention himself. Or aren’t they using handicaps this {ime? ” # 2 ICHARD HOHL, 18-year -old . caddy at Hillcrest, bags a hole in one and is quite! pleased, but it doesn’t affect his score for the round the way you would expect. He finishes with a 95, which is plenty of strokes above his usual good card. You see, that ace gets him into difficulties. Young Hohl, Caddy Master Damon Spalding and Caddy Ed Juniper start out in late afternoon and decide to play the back nine. On No. 12, Hohl dumps in his ace with a 155-yard pitch off his eightiron.

0 ® 2 After the celebration they suddenly figure he’s got to go the entire 18-hole round to make his feat official. So, when they finish the back nine they swing right into the first nine. Master Hohl, all pepped up (he’s not at all accustomed to scoring holes in one), shoots the back course in a snappy 37. ) 8 2 = USK closes in on them as they J) round the third green. They can barely see the hole on the fifth. When they reach the sixth tee it is
