MEATLESS DIETS , By Fay Com I am calling your attention to something vastly more important to the nation than anything I know of history recording. This situation has never confronted any civilized nation before except in time of war.
I heard a discussion over the air. The question was as to whether this nation is becoming a vegetarian nation. The man interviewed stated: “The antique shops and secondhand stores of the large cities are - buying the old meat platters which once dominated the center of every American table.” Perhaps it is a fashion like that of the past war— short skirts—or what is the cause for- the people to discontinue eating meat?
Every degenerated tribe of African pygmies which grow to be 3 and 31; feet tall are vegetarians. According to official reports on school ' children throughout the United States about one-half of the children between the ages of 6 and 14 years old are undersized. The larger cities have a greater number of undernourished children in proportion than do the smaller towns and country. What will be the effect on this nation if the young generation now coming on discontinues eating meat?
Have the young mothers of America been informed that they are rearing a new nation of young men and women who will be subnormal in physique and energy?
I am certain that if you would print a series of articles explaininz what the results of meatless tables will be, every physician would gladly explain to parents that their children should have meat at least once a day,
2 x = TIRED OF OLD PARTY ALIGNMENTS By P. G. T.
Will traditional ideas of the Re- - publican or Demipcrat Parties still control our vote? No, absolutely not. The voters are being awakened to the fact a new or third party is Réeded and will insist on supporting such,
If my father or grandfather supported these old parties, perhaps they were right then, but now problems are entirely different. A new age ar era has arrived. Changes are rapidly made in invention, both chemical and mechanical. Transportation is contributing to the change. Why not fall away from these old traditional ideas of Republicans or Democrats only? Let the voters line up in a formation in. November and turn out both the donkey and the elephant on pasturage. Under Harding’s Administration the seed of distrust was perhaps sown. We saw Hoover's Administration slowing down all activity, and slowly placing millions on unemployment lists. The Roosevelt regime was elevated to control. After almost four years we see the New Deal system failing to decrease ~unemployment. We now find by reports two to three million more * unemployed than under Hoover's completed term. Can. a new party at controls handle with less efficiency? I think the bulk of new voters would gladly support any new ticket or program if only partly reasonable. In a park Sunday a poll was taken of a smal] crowd. The following results were shown: Democrats, 5; Republicans, 6; Socialist, 5, Communist, 1; new or third party, 29. = ” ” HEARST ATTACKS . ARE ANALYZED By Clyde P. Miller
The Times quotes Harry Fenton, Secretary of the Republican State Committee, as saying that Gov. McNutt should have attacked Hearst four years ago. Rather an unsophisticated comment for a politician! Why Harry, the reason Democrats cid not attack Hearst four years ago was because he did not attack them. In nearly all wars, Harry, soldiers attack those they are fighting against, not those who are marching with them-—regardless of motives: Do you hear of any Landon Republicans attacking Hearst now? That would be rather silly, wouldn't it? Ang if Mr. Fenton means that because Gov. McNuit did not attack Hearst four years ago this indicates that Gov. McNuttt then indorsed all
© . that Hearst is and ever has been,
then by the same token, Mr. Fenton ‘who now fails to attack Hearst, but defends him, must certainly now approve all that Hearst is and ever If this is true, then Mr. Fenton, as & Republican Party official, owes an apology to Mr. Hearst for the vicious attacks he and his crowd made on him four years ago. If what Hearst is and ever has been is now

STATE BARNYARD?
By a Taxpayer Have you. seen the Stafehouse yard recently? Who is responsible for. its present deplorable condition? Having recently returned from a trip through several states in the Northwest where the Statehouses and yards are shown with pride to. visitors, I am wondering if we Hoosiers can point with pride to our own Statehouse and its surround~ings? In a conversation overheard recently in a North Meridian bus, one man referred to the Statehouse yard as resembling nothing so much as a barnyard, and I personally feel he is doing the barnyard an injustice. Again I say, who is responsible for the present condition of the Statehouse yard?
BELIEVES COUGHLIN WAS CORRECT By Fred Marlowe
Father Coughlin was right—did not Franklin D. Roosevelt say over the radio that he would do this and do that if he was elected and he was? Did he not fail to do these things? He did. He even obstructed legislation that he had promised to put through. :
Is he then, not a liar and a double crosser? I believe he is. I am not a Catholic, but I believe Coughlin is at least sincere. ” ”» ” WRITER REPLIES TO CRITICISM By Rev. Daniel Carrick
I believe that Mr. Messmer is mesmerized, because he said that my criticism of Franklin D. Roosevelt was uncommon and unfair, and he objected to my saying that the WPA men dug little holes in the ground and then had a bunch of men come along and fill up the little holes. But he didn’t prove this statement to be untrue, for that is one of the things that the records show, and my eyes have seen it. He objects to “hog-killer” and “cotton-destroyer,” but the hogs were killed and their meat was burned. And the cotton was destroyed and people by the millions didn’t have even a suit of underwear and little girls didn’t have school dresses. Past records show that the WPA was never needed, any more than the ‘saloon is needed. The records show that Roosevelt promised the saloon back. It came back and the majority of the people would like to get rid of it. \ And the records show that Roosevelt promised economy in the handling of the government, but we are in debt so much that 200 years would not pay us out at the rate we are going now. The records show that the farmer is not satisfied with the Roosevelt regime, and they also
show that the government has not |.
kept its pledges with the farmer, because many farmers have not received payment for letting - their land lie idle. I want to say to Mr. Messmer that Mr. Roosevelt is President for Wall Street and is not humanitarian, and is not interested in the common people. No humanitarian in the
world would plow under cotton and |:
burn up pork with a fourth of his nation on starvation. I am non-partisan. I have no more use for Hoover than I have for the New Deal. I am defending the American people and trying to keep off a bloody revolution by stopping Roosevelt before he declares himself Dictator. I wish to thank The Times for so liberal a discussion of these facts, for The Times is a great paper, and this discussion is honest and friendly. : » » » SPEAKS GOOD WORD FOR APPRENTICE SYSTEM By Jimmy Cafouros
Once upon a time we had what was known as the apprentice. He worked every bit as hard as the expert but was paid in small change. Every expert took a certain pride in the kind of workmen he seasoned and prepared for the world. A blacksmith was a real blacksmith, A wheelwright was a wheelwright. And a brewmaster knew his beers, Unless one served his apprenticeship at the hands of a master he remained without an occupation. Things were more rigid in those a2, Maybe it ‘was better. Maybe pot. He also had a saying for the human failing of using the words of dead men to regulate the lives of later generations. URGES WHOLESALE ADOPTION OF MERIT PLAN By N. W. If you've been wondering just how much the activities of government have expended in recent
| years, consider the fact that one
job in every 10 is a government position. In no other “industry” has there been such activity, says the Civil Service Reform League. From the lowest units of government upward, the trend in the last decade or so definitely has been toward more and more public administration. » But the trend is significant, too, for its shifting character and immense turnover. For politics makes and unmakes most of these jobs. There still is a large mass of government employes who labor under the shadow of the spoils system, with the result that efficiency and economy are thrown out the window. : It is not the fault of any particular administration, but a common weakness of all. It is time that the electorate became smart and plugged harder for wholesale adoption of the merit system. ” ” ” HOLDS IT'S FUTILE TO QUOTE THOMAS JEFFERSON By James C. Barnet! In the Hoosier Forum Tuesday the Rev. Lester Gaylor in quoting Thomas Jefferson failed to use some of Jeflerson’s most appropriate sayings. Jefferson wouldn’t have liked to be quoted as either for or against

And in that case they will only be paying for their own enjoyment. For the average man to take a chance now would only prove Barnum’s philosophy. The average voter has always been classed as an imbecile by the Republican Party, and their hopes are all based on. the third party movement. I admire some of the

With us who have only our labor to. support us, family and home should come first, and to preserve it we must not take a chance on a change at this critical time.
