LADIES’ MAN BY JOSEPH LEWIS CHADWICK Daily Short Story

MAReA. in her role of secretray to Warren Bradley, prominent playwright-actor, sat at a typewriter in his dressing room at the theater. Mechanically, she was typing pages and pages of script, but thoughts were elsewhere, And she had plenty of food d for thought. Warren saw to that. At present, she was speculating about little Nancy Blake of the chorus, who was blond, winsome and 18. Marcia had got wind of Warren's latest infatuation through the usual channels. It might seem, of course, that there was little harm 4n his lunching frequently with the chorus girl, but the Situation suggested complications. Marcia's fingers lay idle on the typewriter keys. She looked down her nose at her watch. Warren had telephoned that he might be a little late for rehearsal.

UDDENLY, she rose, left the dressing room, and descended the spiral staircase to the wings. She sought out Pete, the doorman, in his cubbyhole just inside the stage door, “Nancy?” said Pete, in reply to Marcia’s question. “No, ma'am, she ain't come in yet. She’d late. She should be in castume by now .. .” Marcia left him, nodding to herself. Without half trying, she could visualize Warren looking tenderly into Nancy's blue eyes across a table at Tony's. A few minutes aftér she had returned to the dressing room, the complication she had anticipated materialized. Sanya Doran, Warren’s dark and languorous leading lady, looked in and found her beating another furious tattoo on her typewriter. Sanya’s tone was edged. > Was Warren in yet? No? Sanya * wag surprised. Had she wanted anything in particular, asked Marcia. No, merely to talk to Warren about her lines—she wanted some of them changed. Marcia was politeness itself. She actually felt sorry for Sanya. But of course, Warren, after he tired of Nancy, would turn to Sanya again. He had before. But Marcia was afraid that, some time, Sanya's much-publicized temperament would revert to common rage, and some_body would be the victim of a hair“pulling episode. Spitefully, Marcia hoped it would be Nancy. That would sour Warren on both of them.

EHEARSAL was called, and still Warren hadn't appeared. Sanya had stopped in again and heatedly announced that that little cat,

Nancy Blake, was also late. Marcia -

had been mildly sympathetic, and Sanya had departed with a clatter of her slippers. The phone rang.

“No,” said

‘Marcia ‘into the instrument, Mr. Bradley isn’t here. But I am his secretary. Would I do?” - “Perhaps you would,” said the polite voice. “This is Bittany’s the jewelers. We have Mr. Bradley's check in payment od 8 rps his | prin purchased yesterda seems account is overdrawn. The bank— er-~returned the check.” “I'll tell Mr. Bradley when he

comes in,” said Marcia and hing up. | 4VA |

She stiffened. So Warren was
