NATIONAL GUARD LISTS DEPLETED

Increase Employment Makes Camp Enroliment Drop, Leader Says.

Increased employment is the cause of a 10 per cent drop in National Guard enrollment for the .annual summer encampment, Adjt. Gen.

Elmer F. Straub declared today before leaving for Fort Knox, Ky., where the encampment is to be held. : “When times are bad, we always have a waiting list for camp assignment,” the adjutant general said. “Unemployed men want the pay the National Guard offers. When conditions are good and improving, the situation is reversed.” - The Indiana contingent is to go to Fort Knox with an authorized contingency of 388 officers and 4540 enlisted men from National Guard units in 40 cities and towns. The encampment, to be held Aug. 1-15, coincides with the second army maneuvers. Advance details are to rove in late this week. Adjt. Gen. Straub said that to stimulate interest in the camp and to insure leaves of absence for men regularly employed, he had asked William H. Book, Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce executive vice president, to communicate with other Chambers of Commerce in the state, asking them to urge employers to give guard members permission to be away during the camp period. Responses to this request were satisfactory, the adjutant general ~~*1 and on basis of the letters he had received, he hoped the Indiana list might be swelled.
