Resolution Adopted
The resolution adopted by the directors follows: “The budget requests of each of the local units of government for 1937 would, if finally adopted, very substantially _ increase expenditures over 1936, and would mean an increase in the total tax rate to nearly $3.40 per $100. Such a rate would be far higher than has ever before been levied against property-in this community. “The serious implications of the levying of so high a rate next year are greatly enhanced by the fact that our community is now being required to pay very large new taxes, which were enacted for the purpose of relieving local property taxes. on this community for local and state governments in 1937 much higher than ever before in the history of the community. “Directly or indirectly, this would place a burden upon every citizen of the community. It would have a serious retarding effect upon business recovery and also Substantially increase the cost of living of all.
Problem Doubly Serious
“Futhermore, to have so heavy a burden come upon the community in a year when it is already faced with very large increases in taxes for Federal purposes and very large new payroll and income taxes 1or Federal and state social security purposes, makes the problem doubly serious. “This community seems to be im position to benefit greatly from industrial and general business expansion. Other conditions that attract new industry are favorable, but, if the local tax imposition becomes unreasonably burdensome, it will have a strong deterrent effect upon the growth of business and employment. It would be most unfortunate for the community to have such an obstacle placed in the path of our present opportunity. “For these reasons, we urge that the local officials who are responsible for determination of tax rates not approve unnecessary increases in appropriations, and co-operate
with the taxpayers ifi every possible’|
