Batholic Laymen of U. s. to Convene on Campus at South Bend.

United Press NOTRE DAME, Ind, uly. %— Catholic laymen from every sec“tion of the United States are to - convene at the University of Notre - Dame Aug. 6 to 9 to take part in the eighteenth annual laymen’s retreat, The thrée-day retreat is to be directed by the Rev. Patrick Dolan, C. B. C., assisted by the Rev. John ~ Delauney, C. 8. C., the Rev. Fred- : erick Schulte, C. 8. C., and the Rev. William Bolger, C. 8. C. All conferences during the retreat will be held on the campus at The Grotto of Lourdes, a replica of the French shrine made famous by the miraculous cures said to be effected there. In addition to the religious ceremonies Father Bolger is scheduled to deliver a series of talks on the moral aspects of present-day eco- * nomic problems. Father Bolger is ranked as one of the outstanding Catholic economists in the sUnited Btates.

$20,000 Bond Issue Authorized by Bartholomew Council.

Times Special COLUMBUS, ‘Ind., July 24—The high cost of township relief came under fire of the Bartholomew County Council yesterday when ‘it alithorized a $20,000 bond issue for township poor relief for the: remainder of the year. Columbus Township Trustee Carl Blessing, called before the council to explain why funds for 12 months relief had been expended in seven, said withdrawal of Federal funds pit a heavier burden on townships.

Paul Cave, 4312 Winthrop-av, told police a man in a car bearing Florida license plates attempted to force his car to the curb at Fall Creek and 13th-st- last’ night, but was stopped by cars coming the other way.

Dr. Bronaugh died yesterday at his home in New Ross. He was the last of his family. Born in Lexington, Ky. he came to Indiana when a child and for 52 years practiced in: Montgomery County. - --

Times Special CONNERSVILLE, Ind. July 24— Estimates of the crowd expected to attend the Indiana State Repub-

lican rally here Aug. 8 were ranging as high as 50,000 today. Col. Frank Knox, Rin Republican vice presidential candidate, and Raymond S. Springer, Connersville, Republican Governor candidate, are to speak. Malcolm Tingley, Fayette County Young Republican Club president, and O. T.
