Radio Involves Millions, N ¥ Rep ~ Reveals; ‘Anthony Adverse, Chap "on Hollywood Hotel Program
Andre Kostelanetz to Go to Hollywood to Lead Symphony.
Simms Radio broadcasting is big business—definitely. If any one doubts . it, let him take a look at last year's receipts, as revealed this week by Director William L. Austin of the Department of Commerce Census Bureau. The report shows that net-
works and ‘stations had a total net revenue of $86,492,653 in 1935. This is the first year that radio has been included in the Census of Business. The report includes eight national and regional networks and 561 of the nation’s 625 stations (as of Dec. 31, 1835). Of the remaining 64, three failed to submit schedules, and the rest were either non-com-mercial organizations operated by churches, schools and similar organizations, or stations with only construction permits. Almost half (49.9 per cent) of all revenue from sale of radio time was made through networks, of which $12,521,832 went to broadcasting stations as payment for carrying metwork commercials. # ” 2
Five states, New York, California, Ohio, Illinois and Pennsylvania, accounted for 42 per cent of total receipts. Strangely enough, however, Chicago's 12 stations surpassed New York City’s 18 both in receipts and pay roll, giving their employes nearly a half million dollars more in salary. ’ » » If you have wondered about radio recompense, aside from the fabulous sums received by such stars as ‘Eddie Cantor and Maj. Bowes, there are the government figures. The ‘average network technician gets $60 a week, artists receive about $91 for the same period, and office and clerical workers, $39. Station salaries are somewhat lower. These figures, of course, apply only to station and network employes, and have nothing to do with headliners’ incomes paid by commercial sponsors.
To those who did not ‘hear the ‘broadcast version of “Anthony Adverse” on last week’s Hollywood Hotel program, we volunteer the information that they didn't try to squeeze Hervey Alien’s gargantuan novel into. an hour's airing. Chap-
Olivia de Havilland, Claude Rains, ‘Steffi Duna and the rest of the last week’s cast back again. They also ‘are in the pieture:which is to show ‘at the Cirgle late this summer. Tonight's broadcast is at 7 o'clock on WFBM.

Good Music BY JAMES THRASHER Walter Damrosch, nearing the
close of his career, finds himself a
pioneey in radio music as well as in our operatic and symphonic
world. On Oct. 2 the noted conv ductor will start his ninth consecutive season of weekly music appre“ciation broadcasts, making him one of the “oldsters” in the youthful field of broadcasting. In his years as conductor-com-mentator, Dr. Damrosch has seen not only a transition from head ' phones and violent static to pres-ent-day “high fidelity” transmission .and reception, but a remarkable _ advance in listemers’ musical taste as well, As he himself put it: “No one ‘ need underestimate today the desire for good music on the part of . the American listener, The num- « ber of fine symphonic programs of- _ fered each week this summer .-. . « and the remarkable season just _ passed is an evidence not only of approval, but alsp a demand for more serious music.” Time to Be Changed ~~ Mr. Damrosch’s progressive concerts, graded to meet requirements . of different age levels, are to be + continued next season,” but the broadcast time will be As © & result of an NBC survey and in response to thousands of requests, . the 1936-37 hour programs will be © heard atl p. m., instead of at 10

Bhe might have kept on as a concert pianist, but Kay Thompson (above) preferred to hi-de-ho with her Rhythm Singers on the twiceweekly Kostelanetz programs. And she probably is much better known than when she was touring as soloist with some of the country’s She’llbe heard, with the rest of the
