Indiana Drops From Slate; Strafaci Conqueror Is ~ Eliminated.

Y, July 23. ~Upsets continued in the national public links golf championship today when Harry Umbinetti, 22-year-old Seattle steel worker, eliminated Geotge Studinger, San Francisco, Cal., conqueror of defending champion Frank Stafaci yesterday, in the third reund, 2 and 1. Umbinetti and Studinger rounded the turn all square although the steel worker had a 37, one over par, to the California cab driver’s 38. The lead. shifted back and forth coming home until the seventeenth, where Umbinetti sank his putt for a birdie 2 to win. : Indiana was erased from the slate when Mike Stefanchik, Gary steel worker who was the only Hoosier to survive yesterday's elimination, bowed to Bruno W. Walter Greiner, 18-year-old Baltimore schoolboy, advanced to the fourth round by defeating Vash Hromyak, Sharon, Pa., steel worker who put out Charles Ferrera, San Francisco, twice champion, in the first round yesterday. Greiner sank a 30-foot putt on the eighteenth green for a birdie 3 which gave him the match, 1 uu. After being 1 down at the’ turn, Claude Rippy, Washington, D. C., haberdashery salesman, triumphed over Kammy Lau, government clerk from Honolulu, 2 and 1. Rippy, who went out in 40, four over par, played the last eight holes in two under par. The Washingtonian evened the match on the tenth when the Hawalian knocked Rippy's ball into the cup for an eagle two. Lau went 1 up on the eleventh when Rippy was trapped with his second shot. Rippy again squared the match on the twelfth; and then won the four- _’ teenth and fifteenth with birdies. * They halved the sixteenth and sev- _ enteenth, but Lau almost prolonged " the match on the latter hole when his 40-foot approach shot hung on the cup’s lip. John Lucas, Sharon, Pa. steel mill worker, won his match from Arthur Owen, 17-year-old Jacksonville, Fla., student, 1 up. Lucas took .a 39 going out and was one down at the turn. He squared the match by winning the twelftly and went one up by winning the thirteenth, Owen won the seventeenth with a par 3 and .they went to the eighteenth tee all square. Lucas won the hole with 5, one over par, when the Jacksonville youngster took a 6. Pat Abbott, Pasadena actor and: movie extra, overwhelmed Don Soccoli, New Britain, Conn., service station owner, 5 and 4, The 24-year-old Californian played the 14 holes in two under par.
