BY RUTH FINNEY © Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, July. 21—~To the

‘gonfusion into which straw ballots,

lis and -applause meters have unged the country, dramatic reDevers were contributing their bit

They re checking on whether Roosevelt or Landon gets the most lause when their pictures are . shown in newsreels. ~ Reports from eight cities indicate Roosevelt has the /edge. He 13 . gtronger in neighborhood theaters “than in the downtown movie palaces. “. Here are the returns to date:

Hoosier Landonites Noisy

~ Indianapolis—Two of three audiences preferred Roosevelt, but in the largest downtown theater, while . the Roosevelt applause was good and strong, the: Landon applause was tumultuous, with whistling. . Akron—In downtown theaters the house is silent when Landon is shown. Roosevelt gets thunderous applause. The same thing is true in neighborhood houses, Toledo — Downtown, Roosevelt's acceptance speech: brought no reaction. Poses of Landon brought applause from about 15 out of a ' house ‘full. At one neighborhood | theater Roosevelt's speech’ resuited in prolonged cheering. At another neighborhood theater, = showing Democratic pictures, a shot of Roosevelt got applause from about 40 spectators. Landon’s picture got less than half as much applaus? and some boos. . Cincinnati—Downtown audiences were apathetic about both candidates. Applause seemed evenly divided. At cheaper downtown houses Roosevelt got loud applause, Lan‘don none. At one neighborhood house in a heavily Republican district Landon got loud and long applause, Roosevelt mixed applause and boos.

South Cheers Rosoevelt

Memphis—Audiences are applauding every time Roosevelt's picture is shown. In neighborhood houses they cheered and shouted for the acceptance speech. Landon’s picture is received with silence. Birmingham—Half the audience applauded Roosevelt. at a large downtown theater when his picture in Shenandoah National Park was shown. Spirited applause from abous a third of the audience greeted pictures of Landon in Estes Park. . Buffalo—Both Roosevelt and Landon were applauded in downtown theaters but .the Landon applause seemed a shade more enthusiastic The situation was just reversed in neighborhood houses. . San Diego—Downtown audiences ‘ ¢heered Roosevelt: wildly, Landon hardly at all. Smaller houses reported cheers for Roosevelt, ‘silence for Landon. :
