less than lution of the C. 1. O. would satisfy it.

Two Possible Reasons Cited

The sudden decision to hold further hearings, and arrange if possible through intermediaries for the defiant C. I. O. men to appear, was ascribed to two possible situations which might develop from an open split now: 1. Further spread of the protests

among the local craft unions, city central labor bodies, and State Federations of Labor. In this connection 15 out of 16 state federations which have met in recent months are reported by the C. 1. O. to have indorsed its program. 2. Possibility that many of the socalled “Federal unions” established in recent years directly under the A. F. of L. might turn their financial support to the Lewis group. Federal unions pay to the A. F. of L. 35 cents a month a member, whereas the 110 international unions pay into the A. F. of L. only a cent a month a member. Thus 'a large part of its revenues comes from these unions, although the international unions have most of the votes. The presence of Assistant Secretary of Labor Edward McGrady in conferences with Lewis and George Harrison, head of the Railway Clerks’ Union and the No. 1 medi_ator- on the executive . council, aroused some speculation as to the political repercussions of the predicted break. But it appears that both groups of unionists are strongly in favor of the Democratic ticket. Mr. Tobin has accepted the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee’s labor division, and Mr. Lewis is helping lead a separate organization, labor's Nonpartsan League, to campaign for Roosevelt on money it collected in its own ranks. President George Berry of this organization reports that 24 craft unions and eight industrial unions have pledged support, in addition to about 100,000 loyal union leaders.

Bergeron brought’ 21 persons—18 whites, two Negroes and one Japanese—from Seattle, Wash., yesterday to see Father Divine, the Negro

whose followers believe him God.

The bus he drove broke down twice en route, his passengers afflicted him with constant cries of “peace, it's wonderful!” and he was arrested in New York before he got a good look at the skyline, He was arrested for failure to display a state certificate, required on busses, that it has been inspected mechanically and approved, One of Father Divine’s personal busses with an “angel,” Faith ye tory, as conductor, took passengers from the end of the a land Tube to a Divine Harlem Heaven. But Bergeron went to jail. He spent the night in a cell, then bailed himself out with $25 he had been given as expense money.
