New Signal to Be Installed
for Trial at Busy Intersection.
Two. new trafic devices are being studied by the Indianapolis police department, Capt. Lewis J. Johnson, traffic division head, disclosed One is a new type automatic signal, designed and patented by an Indianapolis man, and the other is a floodlight for street car saftey "loading zones, The traffic signal, similar to one recently installed at Washington and East-sts, ‘was completed Priday by Dr. Walter Byers, who conceived the idea, he said, after several narrow escapes at automaticsignal intersections. The signal resembles a flower, with one center red light and reflector surrounded by a score of smaller lights. The device signals “go” when all the small green lights are on. The change to “stop,” or the red light, may be measured and anticipated because it does not occur until the green lights have flashed off, Dr. Byers pointed out. Capt. Johnson said installation of the new light will not require heavy expenditure, and that over a period of time will be cheaper to operate than lights now in .use.
Wants Heavy Traffic
The department is to install the I new automatic signal at an intersection which has heavy motor and pedestrian traffic. Installation is to be within the next few days, ac-

Johnson believes. “We believe we have the best kind of safety zone, whieh, incidently, is our own design,” he said, “but we believe, too, that | the lights on them should be: brighter.” Two lights now are used to mark the steel and concrete zones. One is a reflector, and the other an electric light. The new plan, if accepted, will involve installation of overhead flood lights. This system now is used in Fort Wayne, which copied the Indianapolis type safety zone, Capt. Johnson stated. He added that the department must obtain funds before carrying out the lighting: program.
