“They Will Not Indorse ~ Him for President, Leaders Say.

for President, has been invited to Join the Townsend Old-Age Pension ‘Governing Board, Dr. Francis E. ‘Townsend, co-founder of OARP, revealed today as would-be pensioners gathered for their second annual convention, Dr. Townsend said the invitation had been extended last week, but so far had not been accepted. Despite this bid for Mr. Lemke’s collaboration, Townsend Plan leaders insisted the sentiment of the convention, meeting here tomorrow, would be against indorsement of Mr. Lemke for President.

% Gilmour Young, national Townsend Plan secretary, reported today that 9000 voting delegates have been ~ registered so far. Others predicted attendance would reach 15,000. ~~ “At the present time I don't beHeve a third party would be very effective,” Dr, Townsend told a press conference. : “So far as our group is concerned, ~ we will not attempt to organize a third party in 1936. We will use the old party machinery and win a - safe control of the House of Repre- . sentatives and several seats in the Senate. Eventually we probably shall have to organize a third party movement.”

So far as possible the Townsend clubs will indorse Democratic or Republica. candidates who approve the Townsend plan. | To reports that there was much Roosevelt - for - President sentiment ‘among the West Coast delegates, Dr. Townsend replied that individuals could do as they pleased, but no faction within the Townsend -organization has any right to indorse a presidential candidate. “I shall never vote for Mr. Roosevelt,” Dr. Townsend said, “and I shall not vote for Gov. Landon. I am opposed to both the Republican and the Democratic parties as such. I would rather vote for a Socialist than for either of them.”
DENTISTS TO HEAR ABOUT PAIN KILLER
American Association Convention Is Opened at San Francisco. By United Press SAN FRANCISCO, July 14—Dr . Leroy L. Hartman, New York, creator of a pain-killing chemical formula for dentistry, arrived here today " “to describe use of his discovery to the opening general session of the seventy-eighth annual convention of the American Denial Association. Dr. Hartman said he was anxious to correct a mistaken impression that the formula is a “cure-all” for ~ dental ills. “However,” he said, “the formula definitely will eliminate pain in the treatment of teeth being filled for the first time, provided it is applied properly.” He blamed failure of the solution to produce complete anaesthia on improper application. More than 10,000 dentists are present. : Dr. Charles E. Ludolph of ‘Minneapolis, Minn., was elected president of the American College of Dentists for 1937-38.

$150 Taken From Summer Home of Indianapolis Residents. Times Special NOBLESVILLE, Ind. July 14. — Between $150 and $200 that was being saved for a trip to Europe was stolen from the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. John Manien in the south part of Hamilton County. The burglars overlooked $90 in American money but took pocketbooks containing German and French money. They also overlooked several emerald and diamond rings and a large amount of silverware. . Mr. and Mrs. Manien, who reside at 1944 N. Capitol-a¥, Indianapolis, were in Indianapolis at the time of ‘the robbery.

By United Press ANNISTON, Ala, July 14—Two companies of National Guards, in skirmish formation, searched the timber country near here today @in pursuit of a young Negro who assaulted Mrs. Josephine Hill, 25-year-old farm woman, Gen. John C. Coleman, in command of the troops, wired Gov. Bibb Graves that hope of capturing the Negro was lessening. Rain made it impossible for bloodhounds to follow tracks. Reports that a suspect had been captured caused a crowd of several hundred persons to gather in front of the jail. It was later learned a Negro had been arrested on a robbery charge. Twelve guardsmen, with bayonets fixed, were ordered on duty at the prison. A milling mob was dispersed and officers kept the crowd back of ropes. National Guardsmen were prohibiting independent armed posses from entering the area where they were searching. The troops had orders from the Governor to break up any armed posses. A small riot started when a group of white men jumped on a Negro said to be John Miller and beat him. Police quickly restored order. White vigilantes refused. to allow Negroes on one side of the street. About 750 men milled on street corners, surroundin® the jail, talking in whispers.

Competitive examinations for four civil service positions were announced today by Frank J. Boatman, secretary of the local United States Civil Service Board of examiners. Applications must be filed in Room 421, Federal Building. The positions are: Extension specialist in parent education, $4600 a year, Department of Agriculture. Junior home economics specialist, $2000 a year, Bureau of Home Economics of the Agriculture Department. Fire prevention officer, $3200 a year; Forest Service, Agriculture Department. Legislative reference assistant, $2300 a year, Social Security Board.

By United Press SEATTLE, Wash, July 14.— The madcap congressman from Seattle, Marion A. Zioncheck, who designated himself “Exhibit A” for the public gaze, today offered his constituents his record as an inducement to support his candidacy again. “I am decidedly not here to make an apology,” Zioncheck assured an audience of 400. "The crowd applauded. Waving his arms Zioncheck asserted not more than 25 per cent of the stories about him were true. “They were a revelation to me,” he said. “I felt like exhibit A after those newspaper stories.” “Newspaper men,” Zioncheck said, “are like fleas on a dog. Give them some place to scratch and theyll never stop. If they were offered a decent job most of them probably woyld jump at it.”
FIRST ORDERS FOR WAR GAME ISSUED
4928 of Indiana Guard to Take Part.
First orders preparatory to mobilization of 4540 enlisted men and 388 officers from the Indiana National Guard for the second army war games Aug. 1 to 15 were issued today by Adjt. Gen. Elmer F. Straub. Indiana’s contingent, comprising troops from 40 cities and towns, are to take part in the maneuvers at Fort Knox, Ky. Nearly one-third of the United States regular Army and National Guard troops, representing states from the Alleghany Mountains to the Mississippi River are to participate. The advance detail is to leave July 25 and the second detachment July 30. The main body of $roops will not

Balky Oil Well Curbed By United Press OKLAHOMA CITY, July 14.—An oil well 100 yards north of the Governor’s mansion which threatened for a time to go out of control was safely in hand today, subdued after three hours of work by firemen and oil field workers.

Housing Conference to Be Attended by Local Delegations.
Unusual interest is being shown in the Better Housing Institute to be held at Purdue University Thursday under sponsorship of Purdue's Housing Research Department and the, Federal Housing Administration, officials said today. This is the first school of this type in the state, and local women’s, civic and garden clubs are expected to send delegations.
Speakers are to include Dr. E. C. Elliott, Purdue president; Frank Watson, Purdue housing project director; Mary L. Matthews, Purdue home economics department head; R. Earl Peters, state FHA director, and Tom McConnell, associate director, and Mrs. Josephine Williams, FHA field representative. : A luncheon at 12:30 p. m. is to open the program, followed by a visit to the “test tube” village where

Bowen, superintendent, disclosed today. Four are in serious condition. Mr. Bowen disclosed the infants’ illness following the deaths Saturday of Carol Jean Beyers and John Sarec. Heat is blamed for the illnesses.
