Over Heat in Huge Sadi

Fear Many Aces May ‘Burn ~~ Out’ in Efforts to 4 - Make Team.

+ ¥ BY GEORGE KIRKSEY ¢ United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, July 11.—Berlin beckoned today to America’s [ore most athletes—more than 270 of them who enter the last stage of the flerce competition to represent their country in the Olympiad, bebinning Aug. 1. : During the two days of torrid competition in the new $1,000,000 Randall’s Island stadium today and tomorrow, the 59 athletes who will carry Uncle Sam’s shield at Berlin will be picked. The athletes who finish one-two-three in each of the 17 events—except the 100-meters and 400-meters, in waich seven men will be, picked, the extra four to form relay teams—will make the team. There is no court -of appeal. A man either makes the team or he doesn’t on what he does today and tomorrow. World record holders, Olympic champions and favorites who have their {trunks all packed for the ocean voyage will {ail in the heat of the heart-break-ing final drive to achieve the greatest honor which can come to an athlete. ‘No finals will be necessary in the 10,000-meter race. Don Lash, Indiana University’s great distance runner, already has clinched the right to represent America in that . event. Lash also is seeking the 5000-meter honor and must defeat a strong fleld in the final trial tomorrow to succeed. ° The main worry of many of the athletes today was the weather,

Lawson Robertson of Pennsylvania, head coach of the track and field team, fears that the excessive heat, if it continues as predicted today and tomorrow, may ruin the chances of many an athlete who otherwise would make the team. There is also the danger of some of America's best men burning themselves out for Berlin even though they make the team. Only three finals were scheduled today, with Jesse Owens, Ohio State, who has cracked 10 world’s records during his ‘meteoric career, headlining the fleld in the 100-meter dash and broad jump. The other final is in the hammer throw. The remaining 14 finals will be held Sunday. It’s a busy day for Owens, who has won every heat and every event in which he’s participated this year. His program today follows: 2:55 p. m.—100 meter dash, trials. 3:50 p. m.~—100-meter dash, semifinal. 5:15 p. m.—100-meter dash, final. 5:50 p. m.—Running broad jump,

Wednesday night's feature game at Softball Stadium brings together

two of the state’s strongest teams, both undefeated during the present “season. The local Big Four Railroad aggregation is scheduled to clash with the Brazil Elks at 8:30 in a nine~inning affair. One of the outstanding players of the local team is Francis (Keg) Ca d wa llader, first baseman, who during the last two seasons ‘was a member of the Citizen's Gas Co. club. Cad 3A i wallader is fu of chatter and Cadwallader _ backs up his line of talk with some fancy fielding and timely base hits. He drove in three runs in last Wednesday's Big Four victory over Bedford.

The Railroaders extended their season’s winning streak to ten when they nabbed an 8-to-1 victory over Third Ward Democrats in an AllStar League game at the stadium last night. ‘Carl Martin limited the Democrats to two hits.

The Young Democrats team of

"Bedford would like to schedule a

game to be played at Softball Stadium. The team has won eight of 10 games this season. Communicate with Robert Sheppard, 1306 J-st, _ Bedford, Ind.

Fight Figure

Fistic Center ‘Prepares Tribute for Beloved Joe Humphrys.

YEW YORK, July 11—New York today prepared one of its greatest tributes for leather-lunged Joe Humphreys whose name will go down in history with other boxing immortals, although he never struck a blow in the prize ring. The death late yesterday of the veteran fight announcer was due

333 | directly to an old heart ailment,

but the attack was induced by two days of ex~ cessive heat. Funeral arrangements have not been completed for the man with the ‘booming voice who = anmnounced virtually all of New York's ¢ h ampionship sporting events during the last 40 years, but his son, George, who was j at his bedside when death came at Humphreys’ Fair Haven, N. J, home, said that final rites wotild be here. : Humphreys’ death was not a surs prise.. He was 63 and had been in ill. health for three years. Despite the illness, he returned time 'and again to introduce. fighters. He was scheduled for the introduction

‘Humphreys

last month, but was too ill. When Madison Square Garden installed microphones and an amplifying system, Humphreys regarded it as a slur against his powerful lungs which carried his every

23 | word clearly to the farthest corner

of the vast auditorium. He re-

284 | fused to use it for a time, but as

he bécame more feeble he was forced to enlist the mechanical aid. At the third meeting of Barney Joe was so weak that he could not get

13 | into the ring and announced the

fighters through a microphone from his ringside seat. Humphries got his first big chance in 1890 when none of the well-known announcers would dare

266 | appear for a benefit performance 298 | for a boxer named Tom Welch who

had assaulted an expressman.

284 | Humphreys did and his name as a

sports announcer was made.

BY HENRY M'LEMORE United Press Staff Correspondent EW YORK, July HH. — Helen Stephens, the “Babe Didrickson of Missouri,” is a very big girl. She stands but half an inch under six feet, and carries 1556 pounds. Her voice is deep, almost stare tlingly deep, and her mannerisms are those of a big, gangling boy. i Sprawled out in a chair in the hotel lobby yesterday, she talked of her triumphs in the women 's Olympic tryouts last week when she shattered the world’s record for the 100 meters and won firsts in the shotput and jav-

’ “I did the 100 Miss: Stephens meters in ‘leven seven up at Providence,” she said, “but I can do better than that. I can’t run unless I've got somebody in front of me or right ’longside me. You know who I'd like to run? That Jesse Owens boy, I couldn't beat him without a handicap, because girls aren’t just built to run as fast as boys, but if he'd give me a start of five meters, I'd bet him I'd get there first. And in getting there first, I'd break the women's record for the distance'all to pieces. Ill tell you one thing—he can’t come out of those starting holes any faster than I can.
