BY LESLIE AVERY United Press Staff Cor ndent NEW YORK, July 10—Retirement of William Harold Terry as an active player today deprived baseball of one of its truly great players and possibly the greatest of first
with his Memphis (Tenn.) physician, Dr. J. 8. Speed, who diagnosed Terry's left leg injury as a “torn
semi-lunar carti-
lage,” necessitating an operation. Memphis Bill took a flying trip home: during the three-day layoff for the All-Star game in hopes that Dr. Speed would be able to devise a steel brace that would permit him to bolster his faltering Giants by appearing in the line-up daily. Terry can't take a step without-his left knee paining him, and it has gotten so bad that a batsman’s pivot at the plate is impossible. Before Terry places himself on the voluntary retired list he wants ' to pick out someone to help Sam ‘ - Leslie fill his shoes at first base. He is going to try Hank Lieber who used to play the position. Another prospect is Babe Young, former Fordham player with no professjonal experience.
Seldom Missed a Game
Terry, whose brilliant career began under McGraw in 1923, seldom missed a game until this year. The 38-year-old manager has played in but 26 games this year, mostly as a pinch hitter.
The Giants lost their ninth start |g;
in 13 games yesterday, being subdued by the St. Louis Cardinals, 6 to 3, as Leroy Parmelee did a superb
job of scattering 10 hits to his ex- | foo,
mates. The Cards managed to keep a half game ahead of the Chicago Cubs who knocked over the Brooklyn Dodgers in a pair of close games, 4 to 3, and 5 to 4. Pirates Keep in Step Pittsburgh's Pirates kept pace by overwhelming the Philadelphia
Phillies, 16 to 5. The Cincinnati |ch
Reds lost their first night encounter in four starts, 6 to 5, to the Boston Bees. In the American League, the New York Yankees were outslugged by ‘the Cleveland Indians, who spotted them a four-run lead only to come back ‘and win, 11.to 4. Six home runs featured the contest, two of them by Hal Trosky which put him in a tie with Jimmy Foxx for the lead with 22.
Tigers Gain Full Game
The loss cut the Yankee’s lead to nine games over the Detroit Tigers |: who bested the Washington Senas tors, 10 to 7. The Boston Red Sox kept yapping at the Tiger heels with a 7 to 2 decision over the Chicago White Sox.
The Philadelphia Athletics held | Pose
the St. Louis Browns in the cellar by coming “from behind to defeat the Brownies, 7 to 5.
Yesterday's hero: Wally Moses of the Philadelphia Athletics who had a perfect day at bat, cracking out a -double and four singles in five attempts.
Lewis Given Edge In Marek Battle
Times Special CHICAGO, July 10.—~John Henry Lewis, world light - heavyweight champion, was an. 8-to-5 favorite to
win over the robust Max Marek in|
their scheduled 10-round heavyweight battle at Comiskey Park tonight. . The Negro champion, over the weight limit of the ranks he rules, will give the Chicago fighter an ad‘vantage of more than five pounds. Possessing a weight advantage, a cast-iron jaw and an indomitable ‘courage, the local battler expects to offset the acknowledged boxing superiority and speed of Lewis. Marek, whose chief claim ta. distinction is a decision over Joe Louis as an amateur; is in the best condi-

Titular Scrap Tonight |
2
By United Press : J EATTLE, Wash, July: 10.— Babe Risko, left, world’s middleweight champion, today was the betting underdog for his 15round title scrap with Freddie Steele of Tacoma at Civic Stadium tonight. Odds of 10 to 7 were offered on Steele, at right, as a result of his 10-round, over-the-weight defeat of Risko several months ago. Risko is staking his title on the belief that he can kayo Steele in an early round. More than 40,000 persons are Expected to pay $70,000 to see the ght.
Steele is a deadly hitter, with
a majority of knockout victories, but therein lies the only doubtful factor in the minds of those who were so badly fooled in the Joe
Louis episode. For like so many hard punchers, the Tacoma Tagger’s own jaw isn't in the rockjutted class. ' There was evidence of this early in Freddie’s career when an unknown, Leonard Bennett, fractured his jaw. Risko, flattened in the first round by Jock McAvoy and beaten by Steele and Fred Apostoll of San Prancisco in non-title bouts, doesn’t figure to give the Tacoman too much trouble. *
