Is Newest of Major's Ideas
Unit Is to Play ‘Ballroom Shows After New York Engagement.
BY JOHN W. THOMPSON
On and on the Major goes, and where he will stop, nobody knows.
Now - it's the Maj. Bowes’ Dance |
Band, advertised by mail throughout the country today by a silver and gray brochure describing the latest of the versatile Major's “amateur branches.” The dance band, which is not to be conducted by Mr. Bowes, but by Ted Mack, seen lately in “The Great Ziegfeld,” is open for booking by any one who wants it and can pay the price. The band is to play for dances throughout the nation as soon as it finishes an extended engagement at Manhattan Beach, N.Y
The dance group, made up of 15 young musicians, will be augmented at various ballroom engagemen:s ‘with a floor show in which ths Major's “amateurs” will be the stars. Among those he will send out wita the new band will be the Youman brothers, guitar, clarinet and violir'; Bill Broadway, personable youtg singer, and Fritzi Robbins, torch songstress. The dance orchestra is the latest addition to the rapidly growing Bowe’s industry, which by fall
should be earning its once retired:
manager, the genial Edward Bowes, approximately $30,000 a week. ” n 2 : Diminutive Willie and pompous Eugene Howard, brother comedians now clowning nightly in the Chicago presentation of George White's 1926 “Scandals” are to hold sway on a special broadcast over Station WGN at 6:30 tonight. The program also will feature the singing of Helen Morgan, the comedy of George Dewey Washington, and whatever the “Scandals” chorus can offer over the air, . Several years ago’ we spent an evening with tlie Howard boys and Fannie: Brice who then were touring the country in the “Ziegfeld Follies.” The three served as judges in a " beauty contest at the Indiana Roof. When the winner had been chosen, we asked Mr. Willie to announce her name over the public address system. We couldn't get him close to a microphone. Howards, have changed. » 2 ” The ever-faithful Hollywood Hotel program, at 7 tonight over WFBM, is to feature five screen comedians whose guest appearance was postponed from July 3. Adolphe Menjou, of the large wardrobe; Patsy Kelly, lately seen in “Private Number”; Alice Faye who plays in Shirley. Temple's new film, “Poor Little Rich Girl”; Ted Healy, late of “San Francisco,” and Gregory Ratoff,] who played in “Under Two Flags” and who now is directing movies on the side, are the stars. The quintet is to preview scencs from th~ new screen musical, “Sing, Baby, Sing.” The musical portion of tonight's show will mark the return of Anne Jamison as Virginia, Dick Powell's sweetheart on the program. - Dick will handle the ceremonial remarks, and Frances Langford is spotlighted with Raymond Paige's band. » ” » Columbia's - “water-proofed” mikes will be taken 60 feet below the surface of the famous Submarine Gardens at Catalina Island tomorrow morning at 10 for a program describing beauties of undersea life WFBM 1 air the feature. + With ial broadcasting equipment, Ted Bliss, CBS announcer, and Capt. Tinch, well-known diver, will ma e the 60-foot dive for the unique broadcast. ® x =» i Irene Rich, veteran actress who supplemented her theatrical usefulness ‘by {long-term radio contracts, takes her company of players to the Great Lakes Exposition in Cleveland tonight for a broadcast of a new play, “Treasure Hunt,” from . the Rodioland Theater there at 6 over
Walter Woolf King, singing star of Red Horse Tavern, tonight at: 6 over WFBM, is to be made an Honorary Admiral of the Great Lakes Exposition as a part of the program. In keeping with the honor, Mr. King, Lennie Hayton and Joan Marsh have chosen a group of sea songs for the broadcast. } ® = = The opera star who came back from her farm to sing again, Marfon Talley, is to be heard tonight at 8, WIRE, in a series of selections from Victor Herbert's “Sweethearts.” Accompanied by Josef Eoestner’s orchestra, the soprano will ‘also be heard singing “Brindisi,” “La Traviata” and “In the Luxembourg Gardens.” n = o
