‘The Red Mill’ to Be Given|
as Show Boat Feature.
It's something of a radio red-
letter day when that unassuming | and admirable artist, Jessica Dragonette, chooses to supplement her | regular Friday night broadcast with a guest appearance. And the Show Boat sponsors consider them- | selves lucky to have the popular
soprano as an added attraction on |.
their WIRE program at 7 tonight. Miss Dragonette is to star in a half-hour version of Victor Herbert's operetta, “The Red Mill,” and also sing a solo during the first portion of the concert. Her role will not be a new one, for she sang it in one of the “Theater Memories” series eight” years ago. It has been six and a half years since Miss Dragonette began singing for her present sponsors. She has received many offers to appear in concert, but except for one or two notable exceptions, has chosen to confine her art to radio. Apparently gifted with a natural voice for broadcasting, her years of experience have given her a microphone technique that is unexcelled by any of the more famous stars. ” After two conventions had canceled Bert Wheeler's guest appearances with Bing Crosby, the movie comic canceled his reservation for a European passage to stay over and see if he really could get on the air. Tonight, he promises, will be the last attempt. Bing also is to present: the up-and-coming film star, Jean’ Arthur, seen here recently in “The Ex-Mrs. Bradford.” The broadcast is at 8 over WLW.

Stars of screen, musical comedy and vaudeville will help Rudy Vallee provide plenty of variety for his Variety Hour at 7 tonight on WLW. June Knight, singing sensation of [last season's “Jubilee,” is scheduled to be on hand with new hit tunes. Josephine Hutcheson, seen in “Oik for the Lamps of China” and “The Story of Louis Pasteur,” is to appear in a radio drama, while the old favorite, Doc Rockwell, is to offer his famous medical nonsense. A novelty feature, the Twelve Harps, fills out the guest! list. ”

This new CBS program, “Tomorrow's Headliners,” is following the current trend toward-audience participatione by inviting listeners to select talent for subsequent shows. “Columbia has felt for a long time that the audience should have a greater voice in selecting the artists to whom it listens,” says George McGarrett, series director. “We are anxiously awaiting the results of the weekly preference poll.” For tonight's half hour over WFBM at 17, the roster includes Gogo DeLys, West Coast blues singer; the Eton Boys quartet, Russell Dorr, baritone; Prof, MecSmudge, who recites weird poetry. the Stringers, novelty instrumentalists, and Willie Morris, popular young soprano. This is the story of a prize fighter turned comcert artist. When Louis Angel Firpo came up from the Argentine to fight Jack Dempsey he brought with him one Ennio Bolognini as a sparring pértner. After absorbing the Wild Bull's ‘blows during the training period, Ennio was convinced of the fighter's power, so bet all he had on his fellow countryman. What happened to Firpo and Ennio’'s money is history, so Senior Bolognini took out his ‘cello and eventually became one of the best of radio's soloists on that instru‘ment. Tonight he is to join with Vivian Della Chiesa, young Chicago soprano, in a special broadcast celebrating Argentine Independence Day. The broadcast is scheduled at 6:30 on the NBC-Blue network, and is to be short-waved to tne South American republic.

golf for the afternoon. All went well until the eighth hole. Each got a long straight drive, but as they proceeded toward the green they saw a small boy pick up both golf balls and run away with them. The players started to pursue the boy, but soon gave up with the remark: “Oh well, we have a dozen more. Let the little rascal go.” That evening the men went to the radio studio for the star’s program. They were Phil Lord, who

Symphonic Broadcast
i Scheduled
Basil Cameron Program to Open With Gay Mozart Overture.
BY JAMES THRASHER ~ ‘For the third time this week the Overture to Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro” is to open a symphonic broadcast. Scheduled by Basil Cameron for the Portland Symphony Orchestra concert over WFBM at 6 tonight, the work also was done on Sunday by the Philadelphia Orchestra and Howard Barlow’s symphonists. Conductors seem to take a fancy to certain compositions at the same time. A few seasons ago RimskyKorsakoff's “Scheherazade” assumed epidemic form on the radio, and the next year the Liszt Piano Concerto in E Flat might have made the Hit Parade. During the past winter we heard Liszt's “Les Preludes” three times in two, days. It seems safe to say, however, that none‘ of the above can approach the Mozart overture in “wearing” qualities. There are few items in orchestral literature so
