In other words, the bridge | player who is fortunate enough to get a nice assortment of aces and kings should immediately, on picking up his hand, try to figure out how he can make a profit in points on them, rather than have his opponents reap a reward through his mistakes. Recently I watched a gentleman playing in a duplicate tournament held at one of the Long Island resorts. His partner had a very nice

the honors in the deck. He had very little. The result was disastrous, as shown in today’s hand. This is a splendid example, on the part of South, of how not to bid. He should have bid one diamond, not one no trump, at the start. North's reply of two hearts was, of course, quite correct, but when South persisted with two no trump, North did not show his second suit, fearing that his partner would place much greater strength in his hand if he bid his very weak diamonds. ‘When South bid three no trump, North bid diamonds, hoping that, with his partner’s high cards. and

“Old Maid” Tells Jordan Why She Remains Unmarried.

Dear Jane Jordan—Would the bachelor of 33 be interested in knowing why I am an old maid at 30? I am attractive, dress well and have a pleasing personality. I hold a good job but never married because 1 never met a man who could be true to one woman. In my work I | meet many -mar- | ried men, but have never met one above stepping out on his ff wife. Oh, yes, |& they still love— their wives, but | they need a little | recreation from € the monotony of I was engaged to Jane Jordan a young dental student. I gave up my position to help him open an office and used my savings to help furnish it. We were successful and I worked in his office without pay so that he could buy more equipment. He insisted on keeping our engagement a secret. Soon he was making. dates with women to keep them as patients. I came to my senses and broke our engagement. : A year ago I fell madly in love with a man of 32. I thought he was everything T could desire but found that he had been living with another girl for eight years. He admitted it and said that he lied to her about his whereabouts when he was with me, and would go home and tell her how sorry he was to be away from her. Can you ‘wonder that I: can’t believe in any man enough to marry and have become morbid. OLD MAID.

Answer—What you need is a good, hard pragtical view of life. It is all very well to have high ideals as

live up to them all of the time. Part time success in idealism is about all the best of us can achieve. If you're going to be all torn up over the failure of human beings to keep to civilized standards you're destined to writhe as long as you live. ; For example, these husbands whose conduct upsets you so probably aren't half as bad as you think. An occasional infidelity does not make a libertine nor does it necessarily make an unworthy husband. I wonder what would happen if you were obliged to occupy the shoés of the men long enough to see the other side of the picture, Perhaps the little woman whom you see only when she is prettied up

Perhaps she is an inane, stupid, unreasonable or cold person with no understanding of her husband's problems. Remember he doesn’t tell you what is back of the husband’s wish for recreation. As a rule men do not take inventory of their wives’ faults in public although they will accept brief interludes of escape not entirely according to Hoyle. Your young dentist behaved very shabbily. I know you will be sur-

prised to learn that you were in any

way to blame for what happened. You believed he would appreciate what you did for him and feel himself everlastingly in your debt. Your idealistic view simply is not in harmony with facts. Human beings do not like to feel in debt and invariably end up by disliking the peonle whom they owe. Can’t you see how the necessity of feeling grateful to you for a start in life made the young man feel inferior? He accepted your help but I'll wager when he falls in love his emotions will be aroused by some one who needs his help, not vice versa. 1 wonder if your second choice was as bad as he sounds? He has no business living with a girl for eight years without benefit of clergy, but why does she escape

Pry in deep hot fat (375 or heated until a small cube of bread browns in 50 seconds) - until brown and crisp. : : Drain on brown or absorbent paver and sprinkle with salt. ; While you're frying these delicious onion rings, have your oven hot and in it a flat pan with absorbent paper on it. As the rings are done, put them in the oven’'on the paper, thus you will keep them hot until you are ready to serve. Otherwise they will get cold and deep-fat fried foods are impossible to reheat. These French fried onion rings are wonderful with meat of any kind.

your criticism? After all why should she expect pe énce when such a relations plainly indicates that he had no wish for ¢ it? Although the man has no one to thank but himself for his folly, it doesn’t mean that as a character he is beyond the pale. In spite of 30 years of living with other people you still haven't accepted the facts about them; inspite of your judgment to the business world, which is inhabited by anything but saints, you feel that marriage must bring you something different, something finer. Therefore you are single at 30 and less contented than the wives of the men who cheat now and then. No matter what you think, all men do not cheat, not even all of those who
