Farley provide for opening of national headquarters in the | Biltmore Hotel, New York, Aug. 1. | The Washington committee head- ' quarters will ‘maintain a skeleton | staff. There will be no regional . . headquarters, Farley said, although | there may be one or two speakers’ | bureau representatives outside New York City. :
Campaign Opens Sept. 1 Rep. Sam Rayburn (D., Tex) has been named chairman of the speakers’ bureau with headquarters in New York. Mr. Roosevelt's formal campaign will begin shortly after
Sept. 1. Farley “&timated New Deal campaign expenditures at $2,000,000, against $3,000,000 for the Republicans. Plans for a progressive conference, similar to that held here in 1930, are scheduled to be announced next week by Senator Robert M. La Fol"Jette, co-leader of the Wisconsin * Progressive Party. New Deal strategists refused to discuss for publication their hopes for that conference. But it is evident in Washington that they expect full-throated indorsement of the Roosevelt-Garner ticket, along with several recommendations . for making the New Deal bigger and better. Whether that indorsement will be sufficient to protect New Deal po- _ litical pastures against Lemke will depend somewhat upon next week’s developments in Cleveland. Dr. Francis E. Townsend, co-founder of Old-Age Revolving Pensions, Inc, next Wednesday in that city will = to order the second annual Town send convention.
Merger Is Contemplated
The Townsend meeting may become ‘the medium of left wing po- + litical mergers. It wil afford an opportunity forgTownsendites to indorse Lemke, who already is backed © by Father Charles E. Coughlin’s National Union for Social Justice. It may draw into the Lemke parade that remnant of the late Huey P. Long's political army now captained by the Rev. Gerald L. K. Smith. The merged and properly led : forces represented by a Lemke-Coughlin-Townsend-Smith coalition would have large political possibilities. The tendency of such a political movement would be to absorb more Democratic than Republican votes and in a close state it might be the factor determining whether vital electoral votes would ! 8 to Alf M. Landon or Mr. Roosevelt. Farley, who goes on leave from the Cabinet Aug. 1 to direct Mr. Roosevelt's re-election campaign, expressed the opinion yesterday that Fusion | Mayor Fiorello La - Guardia of New York would support Mr. Roosevelt for re-election and that Senator Hiram W. Johnson (R., Cal.) would campaign for the New Deal, Johnson was one of several Progressive Republicans who bolted Herbert C. Hoover in 1932 to _ back Mr. Roosevelt. But La Guardia
