Labor Department Given no Choice ‘in Matter, Secretary Says.
By Seripps-Howard Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, July 7—~The Labor Department has no choice except to deport the 2862 aliens for whom it sought mercy, unsuccessfully, from Congress, Secretary of Labor Perkins said today. Papers in the cases are being assembled. Aliens entitled to a rehearing will be heard as quickly as possible, Miss Perkins said. After that no fufther steps remain between the aliens and exile. J For more than two years the department has been urging passage of a bill giving it jurisdiction to halt deportation proceedings under a limited number of circumstances. | Senator Reynolds (D., N. C.) prevented a vote at the session just ended by filibustering the bill. He also blocked a resolution | which | would have left the matter open until the next Congress.
Relief Boost Seen
The aliens for whom the depart- | ment sought a special dispensation are closely related to some 7000 American citizens in this country, | two-thirds of whom will be dependent on relief if deportation takes place. The aliens have been
certified to be of good character,
| and there are said to be no radicals among them. The Senate's new hostility toward aliens is exemplified in a provision it inserted in the work relief bill, forbidding relief to any alien who had not filed a declaration of intention to become a| citizen. In conference the section was rewritten to deny relief only to aliens who are in the United States \illegally, and in this form it became law. Aliens now on relief who can not prove they came into this country in a regular manner will be dropped.

The Ichihyosaurus lived in the Jurassic period. some 100 million years ago. It must have been a most terrifying creature to the smaller animals about it, with its huge eyes, and a length of about 30 feet. The eyes had a most unusual structure, a specialized bone which protected the large eyeball ¥rom water pressure.
INDIANA’S CUSTOMS REVENUE DECLINES

year ending June 30 totaled $7,367,-

FOR INSURANCE
Unemployment Act, Passed in 1931; Now Is in Operation.
BY MAX STERN Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, July 17—Four hundred thousand Wisconsin wageworkers today are sheltered by the first state unemployment insurance iaw in America. Wisconsin’s law was passed in 1931, but its full operation was.
| postponed until July 1, 1936. It not
only.is the first unemployment insurance law in actual operation, but is remarkable also in that it cails for insurance reserves by companies, instead of the usual sta pooled reserves. j While the first, it is far from the only law on books of the states. Under the Federal Social Security Act of 1935, 12 other states and the District of Columbia have passed acceptable unemployment insurance statutes and are collecting taxes under them. In this group are Alabama, California, -Indiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. Similag measures have passed lower ho! of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Legislatures, and matured plans are being pushed in Texas, Connecticut and West Virginia. South Carolina and Louisiana passed laws, but they have not been approved by the Social Security Board here. /
Many Workers Protected
So far, under the Federal-State plan of the Social Security Act, 8,050,000 workers are covered by accepted laws. Approximately 150,000 employers pay state pay roll taxes into their own state systems. Some 45 per cent of all eligible workers now are covered, and the

Psychologist Says Erratic]
Behavior May Be By Science Service —
Explained. SEATTLE, July 7—Erratic behavior of boys and girls in their early teens, popular subject for modern fiction stories, was given a psychological explanation here this morning by Dr. Mary Cover Jones, of the University of California, who has been studying a group of children of this age.
The big problem in life for boys and girls of adolescent years is to’ win approval of their own social group, Dr. Jones reported to the meeting of the American Home Economics Association. In their de-
termined eforts to obtain this ap- |
proval, school subjects are neglected,
Why some adolescents puzzle and harass their families, while others act reasonably according to adult standards was explained by Dr. Jones: “The boy or girl who is having difficulty in social relationships is apt to be emotionally disturbed and negative. toward adults. When the adolescent. succeeds in making a place for himself in his sociai group, he becomes more effective in his school work, more agreeable and predictable in his behavior.”
Approval of the oposite sex is especially desired at this age, Dr. Jones pointed out. Girls begin to display social awareness earlier than boys. This accounts for efforts of girls to persuade the boys &f their
