i( INGO , . HEADQUARTERS AFFECTS MANY
More Than 500,000 Men,
Women and Children Are Involved.
BY DANIEL M. KIDNEY Times Staff Writer
WASHINGTON, July 7.—More than 500,000 men, women and children in five surrounding states will be involved directly or indirectly with Regional Resettlement headquarters when it is moved to Indi-
anapolis next month, according to Administrator Rexford G. Tugwell,
There are 2863 employes scattered throughout Ohio, Illinois, In- : diana, Towa and Missouri and 350 ‘or more will be in Indianapaqlis under R. C. Smith, regional director. Termed Region 3, Resettlement Administration, the Indianapolis headquarters, to be moved from Champaign, Ill, will be one of the largest and most active. “Since its establishment, a little over a year ago, the Resettlement Administration has made rapid strides in developing its program in this region,” a headquarters official said. “Some 500,000 men, women and children in these five states are now benefiting in one form or another through this five-fold rehabilitation and land-use program. “There have been 96,238 families taken from relief rolls by means of loans or grants and are re-estab-lishing themselves once again on a self-sustaining basis.
Families Escape Starvation “Without such financial aid, thou-
sands of these farm families would
have faced starvation. They had exhausted all credit and resources.
., With the help of the Administra-
tion, these 96,238 families now are on their way back and there is no doubt that the great majority of these farmers can recover and will re-establish themselves. “Evidence of this is that already $10,000,000 of approximately $100,000,000 loaned by the Federal government has been repaid.” In addition to the rehabilitation program in the region, $2,627,917 has
been allotted for development of 12
land-use projects involving the purchase of 170,633 acres. Four of these are in Indjana, three in Illinois, seven in Missouri, three in
~-Ohio and ome in Iowa.
, parks
This acreage will be converted to and playgrounds, grazing areas and wild life refugees. primarily because erosion and other forms of land wastage, tax delinquency and increasing burdens of relief demand that this land be used to better advantage, it was explained. Eight rural and industrial communities are now under development in this region, providing homes and farms for the resettlement of 1601 destitute low-income farm families. Upon completion, these communities will be turned over to nonprofit community associations for taxing and maintenance purposes. These associations, in turn, will deal with each! resident entering -into a long-term purchase or rental agreement.
Such projects already have been |
completed and are occupied at Decatur, Ind.,, and Granger, Ia.
