Applications for Marriage

Certificates Brings Fun, Grief.

Elderly women are the most bashful about giving their age, and young couples applying for their first marriage ‘licenses are the mos’

nervous, Francis M. Feeney, county |

marriage license clerk, observed today. Mr. Feeney has been on the job for six months and during that time he has given legal sanction to 607 marriages as compared to the 1929 heyday of 529. Funny things sometimes happen at the marriage license desk, Mr. Feeney said. For instance, a return on a license issued 10 years ago turned up just the other day. No one is likely to know why the couple waited 10 vears before calling on the preacher. Some Are Veterans About every two weeks a differen. couple comes to Mr. Feeney and asks him please to fill out the license. They are illiterates and able only to sign their mark. Young couples are apt to giggle and shift from foot to foot, but those who are getting their second or third license face the music like old troopers, Mr. Feeney said. He has noticed, too, that the first words the couple writes on the license are apt to be illegible scrawls. Once they overcome their nervousness, the writing becomes clear and bold. Sometimes, the woman is the aggressive member and leads her perspiring - prospective husband up io the desk, tells him how to sign the license and whether or not to buy the $2 pamphlet on marriage.

Job Has Grief, Too.

The job has its grief, too. Early one Sunday morning, a man knocked at Mr. Feeney’s front door and demanded that he give him a license. Mr. Feeney told him to come back at 9 oclock. The man said he would, but he never did show up. Mr. Feeney always will wonder what happened. ~ Several weeks ago. a blind man ~ brought a woman who could see to ‘the license desk and asked for an application. The woman shook her head negatively. Wins A ife, Loses Her

Embarrassed, Mr. Feeney gently told the man the woman did no! want to get married. “Give me a license anyway, an I'll talk it over with Her,” the blind man replied. An hour later the couple returned with the license filled out. The woman's face was tear stained and her eyes were red. They walked across the street and were married by a justice of the peace. ~The next day the blind man came back and said his wife left him.
