He mustn't read in her eyes that she had fallen head over heels in love with him, though they had met but once. “I'm sorry, but I didn’t think it necessary,” she continued briskly. “But tell me, how did you happen to come in here for your manicure?” “I'd heard of the skill of the Parkland’s ‘Marie,’ and, not even connecting the names—why, here 1 am. And I like it.” He leaned forward and added softly, “You know that youre lovely, don’t you, Marie?” “I've | been told,” she parried. Then, after a moment's hesitation, she said casually, “But now that you know'about me, I suppose you'll want to break the date we made for next week. Or don’t you recall that you invited me to the Fortnightly?” Suavely, he answered, “Child, how could forget? But,” with a frown, I'm afraid I will have to "call it off —for this time. He was ready enough to engage her time in a distant city, but here. where he was known, where he had his family’s standing to think of, he must make excuses! She finished his nails in a hurry. Confound his patronage—or that of his relatives! She'd get along with no aid from him! When he was gone, she fled to the washroom and poured out her tears into an unresponsive paper towel. That over, she reapplied touches of make-up and, gazing at her restored beauty in the mirror, set her little chin, and whispered, “Marie, you're going to Chicago.” That night, she sent a wire to her brother, ” o ”

She wanted to scream, to cry out her hatred of this horrid, snobbish world. But she couldn't even let him know that she was hurt. She must smile, and flirt a little and— yes, she'must turn the tables. Her pride demanded it. She laughed, a rippling little laugh, and said, “As a matter of fact, I'm not going to be here myself. I'm giving up my job at the -end of this week. My brother, a night clerk at the Highland Hotel in Chicago, has been urging me to come and take a job there, I made up my mind today.” “Really?” said Frederic Lindhaur. “Why, now, that's fine! pressed her hand lingeringly. “Too late for a manicure?” She hesitated, then smiled. “Not for you—if you don’t mind if I rush it a little?” “I do mind. I want every minute you can spare me.” She flushed, laughed and, in a moment, had set to work. “Marie!” A command. “Look at me, sweet. I want to see those lovely eyes.” When she glanced up, he said earnestly, “Listen, darling, how about meeting me at 10 o'clock?” She said slowly, “Why so late?” “I'm scheduled to be at a family dinner tonight,” ‘he explained. “Mother and Dad are in town with me. It'll be stuffy, but I can’t get out of it. So if you would—" She reached into her pocket, fumbled for a moment, then put her hand on his arm so that he might see the diamond glistening on her third finger. '
