H WED DANGER T0 TREES HERE

Spray Is Advised as Best = Means to Destroy Insect.

Durnig the past two weeks the ~ cottony maple scale has become conspicuous in Marion County, ‘Horace E. Abbott, county agriciltural. agent, said today. This destructive scale insect, : which at this season is conspicuous because of its resemblance to a string of popcorn on the undarside ‘bf maple, linden, boxelder and other itree branches, has not been abundant in Indiana for several years, Mr. Abbott explained. This year, -he pointed out, there Is evidence that natural insect eneimies, which normally hold it in control, have been reduced in numbers, probably due to the exjreme cold winter.

Trouble Is Anticipated

. Trouble from the pest is anticipated for the next few years. Cases tnay require artificial control! bpergtions, he added. The large cottony masses which identify the jnsect contain | thousands of eggs from which the young hatch, according to the agent. Before many weeks the eggs will ‘hatch and the young will begin to * suck plant juices. They will be only partly grown when cold weather arrives, he said. : The only reliable control, Mr. Abott said, is spraying during the dormant season with a 2 or 3 per tent dormant oil spray, the percentage of oil in the diluted spray depending on the abundance of scales. . Where there is danger of the pest killing trees, certain contact sprays may be used provided. all parts of the foliage are reached, he said.
